TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 26 February 1904

To the; Editor. Sir, — In last week's issue a letter si ijned 'A. W. Bowder'' disptavs some very narrow aad unjust ideas with reference to persons who ma5 have very good and sufficient reasons to use a nom-de-plunie. It would indeed be a soitv dav for the general public if the Press exclude J, as proposed by Mr. Bowder, all correspon lieuce unless the writer's name was at tached thereto. So li.ng as the editor holds the writer's name and address, and allows both sides a fair field and no favour, there can be no reasonable cause of complaint. The Press is the one great medium for ventilating public mat ters of interest, and its columns are the refuge of the poor and oppressed, who would be deprived of all hope of redress if Mr. Bowder's medieval ideas of IVess censorship were given effect to. Person ally lam unacquainted with Mr. Bowder. further than havin;? read from time to time in the Press letters of his. bearing on farming and other matters, from which I gather that his sojourn ...

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 26 February 1904

To the Editor. Sir, — In your issue of last week :i letter appeared in your coixespondence column signed ' Dulong,' wherein most errone ous misstatements re neglect of duty as a councillor are made respecting myself. In the first place, if that individual would clearly identify himself and the parts : neglected, I would then l« given a clearer understanding as to what his grievance is. However, all I have to say is that ' Du long' has never asked me personally for anything whatever, otherwise he would have no cause for complaint. He states that all I want is a deviation to cut out the pinches to meet the views of a few people on top, and that this will be the second deviation in 12 months. This I give an emphatic denial to, as he has simply deluded himself. First of all/devi ation Xo. 1 was got two ^ ears ago in Mr. Hornibrook's time. The board simply sanctioned it, and the Mapleton rate payers constructed it at their own cost, putting in four days' work each for 14 men 1 at a value...

Obi Obi. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 26 February 1904

Obi Obi. Following up ray notes of |Ust week re the visit of Senator J.jiT. Walker, I have to relate a little of the sifter happenings. Owing*; to- sonnj:oiie*s carelessness, the honkes got uutof the Royal Hotel paddock at N^nibour, and. in trvineto milke home, got eutangled in some barfieil wire across the road at 2&i&n$m. One hcrse had his shoulder teTri|-ly mangled, and the other escaped withla few slight scratches. IicqVst say barbed wire across or alonj^ a highway is a curse as far as hosse.1 are concerned. Only a short tfhie ago Mr. A. Goeths, mail contractor, had one of his best coach houses badly cut, just as if it was ddue with a large butcher's knife; ^jnd several other valuable animals; in the district are crippled or $is figured in the same way, and^j to make it worse, in many places $ is erected in clothes-line fash;pu. propped up here and there bjj; a little forked stick. A Monster Fish. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 26 February 1904

A Monster IM. On Saturday night last, (writes, a correspondent of the Fassifern ' Advocate '), ji monster fish was landed by 2. party consisting of Messrs. A. and F. Leu, and A. Phillips. When it was known that there was a large fish in the Teviot Creek, in the hole known as the Yellow Waterhole, just opposite Mr. Frank Sweet's residence, the party proceeded to the spot with the intentioij of catching it. A good shoe did the necessary, and amid great excitement the monste: was lauded, and just turned the: scales at 193 lbs. We believe this is a record fishing episodt in Fassifern, and congratulate the part}\ [Now, was it not i\ beer shark or a land : shark?
