PRESENTATION. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 4 August 1881

PRESENTATION. " On Thursday evoning last 28th niult., a number of Miss Carr's friends met at St. Paul's Church by invitation of the members of the Choir, to bid her good-bye and to witness them present her with a small token of their esteem, previous to her leaving Warragul on a visit to the Old Country. Miss Carr has for some time past very creditably filled thuposition of organist to St. Paul's, performing gratuitously theo duties belonging to that office. It affords us much pleasure, therefore, to record this slight mark of apprecia tion on the part of tihe, members of tihe Choir. Thu gift consists of a costly and beautifully bound Church service and a very handsome copy of Hlymns Ancient and Modern, and was presented to the young lady on behalf of the Choir by Mr. Patterson, the hon. secretary. In concluding his remarks Mr. Patterson said; he wished the recipient not to view the gift so much from the point of its in trinsic worth and not to think it was deemed a fair equivaleut ...

CORRESPONDENCE. SHIRE SEVERANCE. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 4 August 1881

CORRESPONDENCE. SHIRE SEVERANCE. TO THE EDrTOR. Sm, - The question whether Neerin should be included in an eastern or a wes tern riding has been a moot point from the time the Shire was subdivided. Both east and west seem to have a claim, and in the end the claim of Neerim itself must decide the question for all time. Up to the pre sent moment it has appeared to me to be difficult to adjust the conflicting claims, anid it may be argued, I think, that the time has scarcely arrived for pronouncing judgment confidently. In the maanwhile our care .must be that the interests of Neerim do not suffer. This year I fancy that more money has been voted for expenditure on roads within the parish of Necrim than in the previous year. As far as I am concerned it was my wish that it should be so, and I shall endeavor to make Nearim a gainer so long as it is connected with an eastern riding, if I am in the Council. The works were let too late this year to be finished, but the money has been voted, ...

OUR RRQUIREMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 4 August 1881

OUR RRQ1JIREU1 IENTS. Stn,-In your issue of July 28 an article appeared under the above head ing, which advocated the extension of our present railway system in the direction of Miirbou and Tarwin River. With one exception the statement made by the writer must meet with theo hearty concurrence of every reader of your journal. The exception is where he refers to the people of Sale posses sing an open watering to the ocean; in making that statement he is evi dentaly at sea. Sale does not possess an open watering, but has for years past been agitating, and will, in the future, continue to agitate to dbtain it. And it is in the hope of obtaining the sympathy and. co-operation of your readers that I venture to trouble you with this communication, and I will endeavor to show that, in- assist ing them to obtain their desires, the people of Warragul and Drouin, iu fact all who use the Gippsland rail way wilL promote their own best in terests. FIRE AT WARRAGUL. THREE HOUSES BURNT TO THE GROUND. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 4 August 1881

FIRE AT TARRAGUL. THREE HOUSES BIUENT TO THE GROUND. During the last two years the town ship of Warragul has more than once been threatened by fire, but has some how luckily escaped anything of a very serious nature up to Wednesday morning last, at about 6 o'clock when the destructive element made its ap pearance in such a form as to cause alarm to the majority of the inhabi tants, and the destruction of three houses. It appears that MIr. H. Powell, butcher, on rising at about six o'clock, proceeded round his house to the side of the building in which the fire originated, and noticed that the house was on fire. He then went back for his son, who, on coming to the spot, at once rushed to the back of the building and knocked the in mates up, and it was with difficulty that he succeeded in drawing M2rs. Loung, the only person in the build ing, besides a little boy, out, she, for the time being so completely paralysed at the suddenness of the event. At about this time two men going to w...

THE QUESTION OF TOLLS. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 4 August 1881

THE QUESTION OF TOLLS. The conference of municipal bodies on the question of tolls met again yesterday, at the Town Hall; Mr. Cameron, M.L.A., in the chair. The chairman reported that a deputation of the conference had waited upon the Minister of Public Works, and that MDir. Bent had informed them that he was opposed to the establishment of tolls, especially on account~of the large number in the neighborhood of Melbourne. The chairman felt sure Mr. Bent intended to deal fairly with the question. He con sidered that if the conference were deter mined to have tolls they should bring suffi cient influence tobliear on the members of Parliament to help on the passage of a Permissive Tolls Bill. Mr. Higgins (South Barwon) moved, "That in the opinion of this conference a Pcrmissive Tolls Bill should be introduced into Parliament as soon as possible, and not left until the Local Government Act. was brought in, as disastrous consequences would ensue from any further delay to those bodies aff...

THEIR HOLIDAY. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 4 August 1881

TilEIR HOLIDAY. BY Gr L. L. O. P. II.. being almost constantly hinting for his leave of absence, that pleasure was at lengtli granted to him. The long-wished-for day arrived, as also did the super, who was to take his place (0. P. II. being asub-operator in a telegraph aflice just outside Mel bourne), nsd offhe wveiilt, preparing in his mind the programmo through which he intended to wade on his arr rival at TV., a station on the Gippa land line. "Yes," said hbe, "I must take that maori club with ime;c foi they tell me that the bears will attack a man if darkness over takes him." So, revolving in his mind the dangers of' travelling by night in Gippsland, he slowly divested himself of his garments, and crept, rather nervously, into bed, where hegradually sank into the arms of Morphens, to rest. Rest?- No! For he had not been asleep one hour cre he awoke nearlysuiffocatedby anottooslacklened grip whici soeemed to close his throat. "Its a bear," he gasped, as he began to awake to reali...
