CLARE DISTRICT REPORT Glare, Nov. 17. ■EXCELLENT CROP PROSPECTS. (From our own Correspondent). Glare has been written and spoket of as " *i ae harden 01 the North." At no time in its history have thtSi remarks been more appropriate than now. A" lew montus ago lire hius and valleys were bare, and the pros pects for the coming; season were on' the gioomy side. Xnow all is cnang&d, and the prospects t-or a gooa season are decidedly iavorable. The dry winter _ has suited; the hill sides and flats, whiph usually lie cold and wet through an cxcess of winter, rains and tena to" perish the wheal ■ plant. But now the average oi wheat for the district will go about 18 bushels and hay cut two tons. Many fields will go well over three tons, thus evincing the fertility of the soil under favourable conditions. The orchards and vineyards are luxuriant with vigorous growth and, weather conditions; continuing favor able,., will easily establish a record in quantity for this district. Apples ...

"THE MISCHIEVOUS ALTERNATIVE. To the Editor, Sir, — Where is so: much that is co7©rt in the letter appearing in your last issue under ttiia heading " Which Way to Renmark " that it is not surprising that .he eeeke the friendly shelter of a nom de plume. THE PHILOSOPHY OF CINCTURING. MR. De CASTELLA AT MILDURA. [Newspaper Article] — Murray Pioneer and Australian River Record — 28 November 1913

fHE PHILOSOPHY OF CINCTURING. MR. -De CA STELLA AT MILDURA In the course of a lecture' delivered recently at Mildura, Mr.:.De -Castella the Victorian viticultural expert, dealt with the question of cincturing the currant. As ' reported by the Mildura "Telegraph," Mr De Gastella said :—Cincturing was- -.well , done in ■ Madura. It is not done as a regular operation in Europe- Ir> Greece it has probably been practiced for centuries, but little scientific work has been done in Greece, and no lit erature^ is available on the' subject, in the. whole of thei -world "France leads the way in Viticulture," yet ^hey know nothing of this operation. Tattle grapes were cinctured ia France but this only applies to the stem of the bunch, and to the rod, and it watf never done in_the same manner as thv currant vine here was treated. The tSld explanation was that the flow of the sap was through the cambium layer, ascending the stem of the tree, performing its , functions in .the] leaves; , and de...

Irrigation Department, was kind tnough to lake - toe lor a drive last Wednesday morn ing through what is known as the Bern" " Western " irrigation eche-mt. Soon after, leaving the township. the new settlement, as it mights be called, is struck, and as the land was only allotted in December last, one cannot hdp noticing how earnest have been the settlers' attempts to bring it tin der subjection. — A Striking Picture. — Quondong' Valley is to-day^ under intense cultivation. Its young grtesi trees, i^ines, and. ■ patches of wheat, arrest the eye at once, and form a striking and- very pretty picture as one tops the rise to.- the west of Berri township. The soil is of red loam, and perhaps a- trifle stiff fa places after flooding, but for the most part may be regarded as very suitable for fruit growing. — Settlers at Work.; — Out of a total of 920 acres allotted In December, 420 lias been clea...

NORTH MURRAY RAILWAY. BERRI WANTS LINE FROM MORGAN. NORTHERN MURRAY RAILWAY LEAGUE. [Newspaper Article] — Murray Pioneer and Australian River Record — 28 November 1913

NORTH MURRAY RAILWAY. c berri wants line from morgan. northern . mtjrra"5 railway league. A meeting of settlers, traders, and others, was held in' the Berri Insti tute on Wednesday evening to d.scucs the prospects of a railway from Mor gan to Renmark. Mr. F. R. Arndt, President -of the Bcrri .Progress As coc.ation, was in tlie chair and iL open ng tha meeting ..said; they ali realthe necessity of a norihtrr. line. ' Mr. Vaughan had already been agitating for it. At Murray Bridge a large amount had been spent in bridging the Murray. Surely a rail way from Morgan up river, tapping Cokdogla and Eerri and other -grow ing districts, was better than build ing a bridge- at Paringa. The cost would be a little; more. From a statesmanlike point of view there was only one th.ng to do, and surely the people of Renmark realized the fact ■.-.Hear. h:ar). Mr. Arndt then moved the following resolutions - 1. That this meeting of residents c Berri and surrounding district vi, the Government to constr...

RAILWAY TO RENMARK. CASE FOR THE MORGAN EXTENSION. [Newspaper Article] — Murray Pioneer and Australian River Record — 28 November 1913

RAILWAY TO RENMARK. V CASE FOR THE MORGAN EXTENSION. The following letter from Mr. J. M, Brand, of Ran mark, appeared in the ".Register " of--November 14 :— The peoplci of Renmark, through their committee "appointed lor the purpose, are asking the government to extend the railway from Paringa into Renmark, and the Government is procuring an estimate of such ex. tension. This is a selfish proposi tion from a Renmark point of view, and as a Renmark settler, my con science will not allow me to take Dart in the agitation. To ask the &ov-rnment to spend a sum approach ing £100,000 to serve Renmark alone is beyond a ioke. I believe Renmark should have a railway, but its people should have Eome consideration for others. The Government will te wise to get an estimate for a line from M'organ to a point about five tniles north-cast of Morgan, thence due east, to old Ral Ral, and into ; Renmark,, a distance of 65 miles, Pas-j sing a&out three -miles at the tack of Weston's Flat...
