The Engineer in Local Government. THE MOREE MUNICIPAL MUDDLE. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 6 July 1914

The Engineer in Local Government. THE MOREE MUNICIPAL MUDDLE. Moree (N.S.W.) , being a municipality, is not obliged under an anomalous Local Government Act to employ apermanent qualified engineer, as would be the case if it were a shire having a revenue of £5000 or over. And Moree, like many other muni cipal bodies which have to be legislated into doing right, takes full advantage of the indulgence. The apparent result is the common and inevitable climax' to all such amateurish administration — chaos, or very near it. ,; V' From the report in the last issue of the local press we note that the clerk recently presented a report on general administration. The officer, from what we can gather, periodically wipes his pen to run across country and decide some engineering problem: He returns to tot up the next column of figures; and if, in the rush, he leaves the engineering problem undecided and makes 2 and 2 add up to 5 and, inci- '. dentally, makes an ass of the council in the eyes of t...

CHURCH OF ALL SOULS, EVANSTON, ILLINOIS. Marion Mahony Griffin, Architect. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 6 July 1914

CHURCH OF ALL SOULS, EVANSTON, ILLINOIS. Marion Mahony Griffin, Architect. This is an extremely simple and beautiful design, betokening the simplicity and beauty of the religious belief. From the aisle the altar presents a remarkably striking- effect, achieved by a novel scheme of roof-lighting, the panels in the glass design appearing in perspective to radiate from the central figure in bands of colored light. Relief is introduced in the piers supporting the arches by receptacles for fresh foliage which is infinitely better, with its natural beauty, than the meaningless foliage carved in stone, as is usual in Gothic architecture. Note the daintily artistic lamps, so devised that the light is distributed without glare. The whole scheme is delightfully original.

WIDTH OF TYRES. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 6 July 1914

WIDTH OF TYRES. The N.S.W. Shires' Association has been circu larising the shires with reference to a width of tyres measure, and propounding dimensions of tyres that it considers adapted to the preservation of roads. Few will deny that some such measure is needed, but the difficulty appears to be in introducing it, seeing the number of vehicles that are now run on narrow tyres, comments a country paper.. An absurd proposition by the Association is the the first year, and doubled each succeeding twelve months. The wise-acres who tacked this propo sition on to the draft regulations are manifestly amateur mathematicians, and certainly never seri ously studied arithmetical progression. This doubling system would mean that in the twelfth year of the registration, the owner of a vehicle would .have to pay £20-18, a crushing fee, and if imposed : would make the running of wheeled vehicles pro hibitive. The Association should, before issuing a proposal on so absurd a basis, have given the ...

BUILDING RECORD. OVER A £1,000,000 INCREASE! [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 6 July 1914

BUILDING RECORD. OVER A £1,000,000 INCREASE ! Our contention that, despite the misgivings generally entertained, the a'nnual million-sterling increase would be maintained in Sydney's building activity, has been borne out by the I'ecently issued report of the Water and Sewerage Board, covering the period from July 1, 11 913, to June SO last. The statement shows that the number of build ings brought to completion and supplied with water by the Board during the year was 9S2S, as against the previous year's total of 92(57, which was then the highest record. In addition, 19!) Old properties were reached by the new mains laid. The cost of erecting the 9S2S new buildings referred to, together with additions to old properties, was preceding was £5,T3;J,4;3O. The districts in which building activity was greatest are as' follows: — Buildings. Cost. Canterbury ? 70j ? ? £245,6,60 Randwick ? 694 ? : 469,1.12 Waverley ? 50S ? 21 S.705 Willoughby ? -498 ? 253,989. Marrickville ? 44S ? 244,183 Ash...

MINISTERIAL RECKLESSNESS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 6 July 1914

MINISTERIAL RECKLESSNESS. N.S.W. Minister Griffith says that to run the State brickworks as the unionists would have them might lie' good unionism; but it isn't common sense. Wherefore the Minister is classed with the capital ists and nationalisation declared a failure. Griffith 'denies the .soft impeachment, also the allegation that he used once kiss the hands of bottle washers. In fact, he has of late got quite recklessly disregard ful of consequences in his replies to unionists. We would not be surprised to hear of him shortly challenging the caucus to 'bring out its big black cat.'

THE LOT OF THE MASTER BUILDER. President Williamson Talks. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 6 July 1914

THE LOT OF THE MASTER BUILDER. President Williamson Talks. President Williamson told the State Governor, the Prime Minister and other celebrities at the -Architects' dinner something of the troubles of master builders. He was speaking in response to the toast of kindred societies, and mentioned at the outset that the master builder supplied the practical portion of the architects' ideals. Someone had - previously mentioned that the first axiom of archi tecture was to adhere to the truth of things. He .assured them that master builders generally got at the truth, bedrock — especially as regards the price huunmicu ueiore me jou was got. ^j-.augiutr.j ''In these days,' continued the President, 'we only ask for clean, straight competition. The more competition, the better we like it. In fact we should like to see still greater competition, particularly in Government work, because we recognise that we have made, our way with the old British spirit — fighting every inch.
