THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S PRESENTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 19 June 1869

THEDFEEOF EDINBURGH'S PRESENTS. Some t)f the EnghshTdewspapers comment in rather '???' :- severe terms upon the proposM Parliamentary vote' ' ;- of £3374 14s, to reimburse his Royal Highness *ie Duke of Edinburgh the oosts of the presents ' ; made by him at the Cape and in Australia during; ' : *is present' Voyage;. .The Weekly Ditjpatch of April llTth says s— *? Some of. the miscellaneous 'a'; expenses charged in the Civil Service Estimates are bf . rather a strange character. It is a very good thing, po doubly that Princes of, jthe blood should see the world; and as the Duke of Edinburgh is a captain in the navv. we make no Particular Wjiec tioh to his making, the modern grand tour— all round the world-^iii a frigate. But if he feels in clined to make presents, as a generous young man of Mgh-etatipn woula wish to do, it, seems a pity to deprive l)im of the pleasure he would otherwise , . derive, by charging his , gratitude to' the national ' account. I? hitliei to we' have refrained from expressing an opinion 1 especfrog tlie administration of the Public Schools Act, we have not been the less observant on that account of the working of the Act. Ushered info existence amid a flourish of traiinets which, even here, in the ultima thufe o? the colony, made the welkin ring, the Public Schools Act was stated by its defenders to prove at least an effectual remedy for (he many alleged imperfections of the Old system of education, it not a regain pnnnee.i for 'all the ills that flesh is heir to.' Wellfon duoted schools, among otW desiderata, should, it was urged, everywhere arise, and with mushroom ? g.-owth; no child throughout the length and breadth of the land should be deprived of an edu cation fitting fcim for all the walks of life; the position of the teaching profession considerably benefited, &c. THE ROCKHAMPTON MURDER CASE.—DOINGS OF THE GANG THAT MURDERED MR. HALLIGAN. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 19 June 1869

THE EOOKHAMPTON MTJRDER CASE.— DOINGS OF THE GANG THAT MUR DERED ME. HAIXIGAN. We have received the following particulars in con nection with the murder on official authority. It' appears that Palmer was at Gympie last year, and, was one of the two men who stack up tke'Gynjpie coach, upon which occasion ' a gallant resistance was offered by Mr. Belwyn King, & bank clerk in Gympie. Mr. King shot Palmer's mate, a man named Bond. He was carried off the scene of action by Palmer. The place became too hot for Palmer after this, and he came to Boekbamptonin December or January last. Some . time after he met Archibald, Charlea Taylor, who %ad been; Archibald's groom, and a man known as Williams or Old Jack. They met in a private house In .Rockhampton and concocted a plan to rob HaUigan. on one of his trips from the gold-fields to town. For some time prior to the murder Palmer was camped at Baker's hut at the agricultural reserve, for the purpose of carrying out this plan. The hut, ...

LAMBING DOWN. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 19 June 1869

LAMBING DOWN. A NOT uncommon incident in colonial life was made public in the case of Grant v. Sullivan, tried in the Supreme Court of Victoria. Grant was formerly a squatter at the Goulburn River, and incontinently went on the spree, after the manner of bushmen. In his peregrinations' he came to the Hummums Hotel, kept by the defendant Sullivan. Here he Was detained. four weekB, during -which time tho ' process technically known as *' lambing down' was carried on. Grant* who seems to have been more or less intoxioated, throughout his visit, at, different intervals gave three cheques . amounting in tne ' whole to £220, £2t6 of urtnch Mrs. SuUivaii ????? obtained possession of. When- Grant came to his . senses he wbb told that aU hia money was spent ; the aooount being made up of board and lodging at the' rate of £5 Bb. per week, drink, cash paid; breakages of crockery, and drmages to beds. He was not satisfied with the aooount rendered, and brought an action to recover the £216. The...

PAUPER EMIGRATION. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 19 June 1869

.:'';' '^AI*BrS~MIGRATIOK, ? '' EinaEWiON to the colonies never attraoted more - ' ? attention in this country than, at fhe present time. There, is a prevalent' idea that our (Engh'Bh) pan* ' ' perism may be relieved in thb way % and that the ? ? colonies will be glad to - receive the inmates of our - workhouses! Some time ago. the limes had an article supporting this . view, and the other day Jjord Houghton brought the subject before the House of Lords. He thinks that the emigration of paupers should be facilitated ; and suggested that Poor Law Boards and the Colonial Govern- - ments should 'lay their heads together' to ship off as many able-bodied paupers as possible. The colonies are not likely to benefit by the introduc tion of an idle, shiftless, and broken-down 'set of : people; and, as Oiord uranville pointed out, do not desire such immigrants as they would be sure to get under this, system. This is an insuperable obstwle at starting, and somebther mode will have . . to be di...
