THE FROZEN SEA. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 18 November 1893

THE FROZEN SEA. In eastern Siberia lies Lake Baikal, which is a mile deep and has an area one third greater than Lake Erie. From November to April it is frozen, and as the lake is part of the commercial highway between-Russia and ,'hina it is crossed in winter upon the ice. For about a mile from shore the ice had a thin layer of snow over it, but we gradually left this sort of dazzling white carpet and at length reached the clear ice, when I saw around me the most wonderful and bewitching sight I ever beheld, says a writer in Arctic Ocean. Owing to the transparency of the water, the iCe presented everywhere the appear ance of polished crystal, and, although undoubtedly of great thickness, was so colorless that it was like passing over sprce. It gave me at first an uncanny feeling to look over the side of the sledge down into the black abyss beneath. This feeling, however, gra lually changed to one of fascination, till at last I found it positively difficu't to withdraw my gaze fromu...

Tw6 children weie presented for the certificate of merit examination, and Isabella Campbell Was successful in securing that civeted distinctioni. The rain experienced latelyj will prove very beneficial to the crops as it was urgently wanted, the previous dry . hot weather having caused the. giound to become surface bound, thereby grfeAtly retarding their growth, causing tidmn to assume a stunted appearance ; bat the moisture received will be the means of stimulating them with renewed vigor, which will greatly increase the yield. WAITERS OR GUESTS ? [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 18 November 1893

WAITERS OR GUESTS4? How often have visitors at hotels where most of. the company were strangers to them been puzrled, on seeing a quite, demure looking gentleman standing alone, to know whether he was a waiter or a fellow-guest ? Germany has made an effort to obviate any such uncertainty, and has introduced a change in the dress of hotel-waiters. This consists of a uniform very much like that of the stewards on board ship. The tailless jacket of dark blue cloth bears on the collar the grade of the wearer, the head waiter showing three stars aun his subordinates two or one, according to degrees of proficiency in their profession.

The Sunbury News. Be Just and Fear not. SUNBURY, SATURDAY. NOVEMBER 18, 1893. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 18 November 1893

1OVEtMfER 18, 1893. . L.ETTER appeared in these columns, written by Mr Just, Secretary to the Sunbury Mechanics' Institute, last Saturday, in an ttempt to reply to i loeading article printed by us quite recently. I.t will be remneimbered by our reiders that We complained of being debarred from attending com miitteo meetings irn Connectitrn with the Sunbuiry jMhchnics' Institute, while one of the same body was permitted to send notes ad libitum to a paper printed a- few miles out of the township. Of this Mr Just writes :-" Should there be a member " of a committee correspondent to " a newspaper printed a few miles " out of Sunbury, he does not attend ' as a ' lecording angel,' and if he be " debarred from giving his mental " notes to a paper circulatiig in this " district, much more should the " secretary be prevented from supplying " his official notes, etc., to the Sunbuay " News. A ROYAL QUEEN OF HEARTS; OR, Love's Devotion. CHAPTER XXXV. THE LONG SILENCE BETWEEN THE LOVERS IS EXPLAINED. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 18 November 1893

QUEEN OF HEARTS; OR, Love's Devotion. By MRS. G. SHELDON. CHAPTER XXXV. THE LONG SILENCE BETWEEN THE LOVERS IS EXPLAINED. One lovely afternoon, about the middle of the month, Shirley tripped lightly up the steps leading to the elevatedstation to take the train for home. It was a little over a year since she had first met Clifton Vining, yet, though the varied experiences of these thirteen months had tended to sadden her somewhat, giving a touching expression to her great blue eyes, and a slightly pathetic droip to the sweet mouth, she was not one whit less lovely than she had been at that time. Suddenly she became conscious that some one had stepped back beside her, and turning her head she saw a gentleman reading a newspaper, in which he appeated to be deeply absorbed. She could not see his face, but there was something strangely familiar about his form-so familiar that her heart gave a great bound and she caught her breath sharply. The sound attracted the gentleman's attention. He...

SMUGGLERS' TRICKS. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 18 November 1893

SMUGGLERS'. TRICKS.' We were watching for a diamond smuggler once, said a custom house inspector. The suspected individual had arrived and in every respect answered the description we had re ceived. I need not say that before the steamer landed everything. about that man-his baggage, the lining of his clothing, the handle of his satchel, his person, from the rim of his hat-band to his toe-nails, underwent a search, but to no purpose. Apparently we were on the wrong scent. Nonchalantly sucking an orange, he stepped ashore. A keen eyed female detective attached to the department \\hispered to one of our officers, "' Suppose you try that orange W' It was done, and the man turned white with vexation and anger when we found in the pulp a score or more of the precious gems. Several ycars ago, among a steamer's passengers, was a well-known traveller, of whom it was reported that he had a large amount of diamonds. The infor mation was so much in detail that even their place of concealment w...
