Noxious Animals Subsidy. DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER. On Wednesday night last a small deputation waited on the Hon. Sydney Smith, Minister for Mines and Agriculture, at Parliament House, in regard to the Government subsidy for the destruction of noxious animals. The deputation consisted of Mr. Alfred Brown (Narrabri), Mr. R. F. Irving (CoonabarabranV and Mr. McNulla, hon. sec. of the Pastoralists' Board of Advice. The deputation was accompanied by Thos. Gossip. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 10 July 1896

Gossip. Go3sip, dear, I want to talk to you, and if all the readers of the ' Sydney Stock and Station Journal ' listen to us we can't help it, can we 1 Some day, when I met you at a show, we were going to have a talk about books, and a station library, and matters of a cognate kind, but you can't find time to talk at a show. My experience goes to prove that solemn subjects are best left un touched at such times, and your house is so far from a railway that, I fear me, we'll never have a chance to talk about books in a leisure hour, so here goes for our talk now. It was dear old Oliver Wendell Holmes who taught me that the best way to get to know what you know about a subject is to run a string of talk through it. It is also true that the chief use of conversation is to enable you to crystallize your thoughts round a given subject, so I welcome the chance of a talk with you, even though it may sound like a bit of monologue to those who know neither of us. it When any man sets up to t...

The Diseased Meat Act THE MATTER BEFORE THE STOCK BOARD DELEGATES. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 10 July 1896

The Diseased Meat Act THE MATTER BEFORE THE STOCK BOARD DELEGATES. A largely attended meeting of dele gates of the stock boards was held at Aarons's Exchange Hotel on Tuesday afternoon, The chair was taken by' Mr. Alfred Brown (Narrabri). A requisition was handed in from cattle buyers doing business through the Flemington Saleyards. Tne requisition stated cnat tne system adopted at present in regard to the sale of cattle, by which the buyers had to bear the whole loss of all beasts con sidered by the Board of Health in spectors Jto be diseased, was unsatis factory. They suggested that a re fund of one-half the cost of any diseased animal be returned to the buyer after the vendor or his agents were satisfied af the identity of the beast, thus evenly dividing any loss sustained. It was pointed out that since the present arraugeinen . had been in force a great many buyers, both wholesale and retail, had given up pur chasing at the Flemington yards, and hence there was considerable shri...

The Anthrax Articles. A GREVIOUS ERROR! [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 10 July 1896

The Anthrax Articles. I A GREVIOUS ERROR ! ; Our worthy ' Globe-Trotter ' has ;j been writing a series of articles on ! ' Anthrax,' and they've been criticised a good deal. One man, a very clever fellow, said 'They're very nice read ing, but I don't suppose they're true ! ' True or not some very clever scientific people have expressed their satisfaction ,vith them, and the proprietors of this paper are satisfied. As this standard is a high one, that is saying a good deal ! Our ' Globe-Trotter ' has made one grevious error which we hasten to correct. In article VII., he said that Mr. McGarvie Smith ' invented a vaccine.' That was not Drue, ap parently, for the following correction has come to hand : — ' He invented a process for keeping vaccine.' It appears that Mr. Gunn invented the vaccine. Well, our ''Globe-Trotter' removes his hat and apologises. He said hedidn't care a something who invented the thing.' He was dealing with anthrax and its cure, and not specially with the invento...

The Block Test. AN APPARENT NOVELTY. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 10 July 1896

The Block Test. AN APPARENT NOVELTY. When the Hon. Sydney Smith offered a prize for the best pen of fat sheep for export, one of the conditions was that there was to be a ' block test.' The average man said ' what's that ? ' for it appears that such tests are rare in Sydney. The idea -was that the ability of sheeD-men to eruess the weights of sheep should be fairly tested. The results showed that some men who ought to be good judges are not, while some men are much more accurate in their judgment than most people would readily believe. The plan of the test -was simple. Mr. C. R. Bruce, a smart young wool classer, who graduated from the Syd ney Technical College, took charge of the test. He is the son of Mr. Alex. Bruce, the Chief Inspector of Stock, so he was in his element. He issued tickets at 2s 6d each to those who were going to guess. Owing to the lack of advertising there were only 20 entries, and the guessers were very wide apart. Mr. Bruce picked out two sheep, a merino and ...

' Why, Tommy, you are not ab the jam again and only whipped for it an hour ago ?' ' Yes, mamma ; I heard you tell auntie that you thought you'd whipped me too hard, and I thought I'd make it even.' ' Your verses are very good, miss,' said the editor in his kindest manner, '\but we cannot possibly use them. Our columns are too crowded.' 'Can't you leave out some of that stuff you publish under the head of ' Wanted V ' suggested the poetess. ' It is very uninteresting.' Girls, be very shy about marrying a man who can suppress a full-grown sneeze in church. It indicates an amazing amount of will power which will interfere with your happiness some day. While Sam, the coloured man-of all work, was over seeing the burning over of a part of the college campus, a freshman coming along cried : ' Well, Sam, that's 'most as black as yon are ! ' Yes, sah,' replied Sam ; ' and next spring it will be 'most as green as you are!' A lady who teaches a Sunday School class, and who has recently become...

The Tick Position. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 10 July 1896

The Tick Position. The reader who has carefully studied the opinions of Mr. Bruce, Chief In spector of Stock in New South Wales, Mr. C. J. Pound, Directorof the Queens land Stock Institute, and Dr. Hunt upon the tick pest will not have gathered much comfort. So far as stamping the pest out in the north is concerned by any human action, we think one might aa well try to mop up the ocean with a millet broom. All thab can be done is to look for remedies for the disease which follows tick attacks, to render stock immune by inoculation, and to keep clean those areas which have not yet been affected Should the anticipations of some of our friends be realised, Dame Nature will step in, and friend tick will go the way of the plagues of caterpillars, mice, ratg and all the other '? epidemic ' pests which tr )uble the heart of the pastoralist. Mean while, the oil dips have been proved temporarily cleansing, and with a series of dips ou stock routes the danger of spreading the pest may be much...
