ALL description of sores are remedied by the proper and diligent use of this inestimable preparation. To attempt to cure bad legs by plas tering the edges of the wound together is a folly; for should the skin unite, a boggy diseased condi tion remains uuderneath to break out with tenfold fury in a few days. The only rational and success ful treatment, as indicated by nature, is to reduce the inflammation in and about the wound and to soothe the neighbouring parts by rubbing in plenty of the Ointment as salt is forced into meat. This will cause the malignant humours to be drained off from the hard, swollen, and discoloured parts round the wound, sore or u...

The Bega Gazette. "Quod petis hic est." SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1868. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 22 February 1868

Ct)t 33cp #a>ctte. " Quod jictis liic est SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22,183S. The question is often raised, " What is the use of a public meeting ? Nobody attends them". "What is the good of talking or writing about roads, mails, or any other public mat ter ?" No one takes any interest in them, or troubles their heads about things that do not immediately and individually affect them. Such are the remarks of the inhabitants when ever any subject which phould be, of general importance is brought before their notice. The provincial mind is go thoroughly imbued with self inter est that it is blind to everything, else. " What care I for trunk lines of roads'; it is immaterial to me whether they are macadamised, or reraaim impass able roads and quagmires. I manage to get along very well; let those who find fault, repair the roads; it is nothing to me." Another will say, " It .is all nonsense talking about a mail to Merimbula; j^ou won't get it. Public meetings are all humbug, for nobody will a...

ADDITIONAL EUROPEAN ITEMS BY THE MAIL. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 22 February 1868

ADDITIONAL EUROPEAN ITEild BY THE MAIL. The Queen's Theatre was destroyed by fire on the 6th December. It was discovered at a quarter before 11- in the evening, and<in a few minutes after the flames burst through the roof; it blazed with such brilliancy that Trafalgar-square was as light as day. Fortunately, there had been no performance that evening, or loss of life must have occurred. The strong party wall between the theatre and Pall Mail resisted the flames. The firemen confined the destructive element to the building, though the house of Graves, a picture dealer, was threatened. The excitement in the metropolis was immense. Mr Mapleson was the lessee, and, being uninsured, he is a heavy loser. The theatre belonged to Earl Dudley, and was insured for £70,000. Nothing except the bare walls remain. Madame Titiens, Mademoiselle Kellogg, Mr Stant ley, and the principal artists, have lost t'leir extensive and costly wardrobes. The music of a large number of operas and the ...

THE PIRATE'S LAST PRIZE. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 29 February 1868

THE PIRATE'S LAST PRIZE. It is now a long time since I was appointed to the corvette Firefly and ordered to the West Indies to chastise the pirates. The Firefly was the fast est cruiser that had been in tlrose waters for twenty years; the battery was heavy, consisting of eighteen twenty-four pounder carronades, aud two long eighteens in the bow ports ; and with the wind two points free, she would outsail anything I ever met with. After leaving New York I proceeded direct to Havannah, where I laid for soma days collecting all the in formation I could, and at last obtained a clue which I thought, by following up closely, might lead to great re sults. The Caribbean Sea and waters around the West Indies were at this time infested by a gang of scoundrels, under the commmd of a most despe rate aud bloodthirsty man, known by the name of Captain Satan. This villain had command of a large, beautiful schooner, which was known by the name of the* Scorpion, and he had established for himsblf a ...

BI0SRAPH5T. No. 2. Lord* Francis Jeffrey. Francis Jeffrey, by courtesy Lord Jef frey, a distinguished Scotch judge, essayist, and one of the founders of the Edinburgh Keview. He was the son of Mr George Jeffrey, a deputy clerk of the Court of Session, and, at eight years of age, was sent to the High School of Edinburgh, where he was remembered by a fellow pupil as " a little, clever, anxious boy, always near the top of his class, and who never lost a place without shedding tears." At 14 years of aje, he was sent to the university of Glasgow, where, in the de bating sooieties of the college, he soon distinguished himself above his fellow students, by his fluent speech and severe criticisms on the efforts of his opponents. While at Glasgow, lie' formed a habit of making notes and abstracts from books, 1 and writing essays, which had its advan tage in his after-career. This practice was continued when he returned to Kdiu bttrgh, in 1789; and his hioe^Uer, Lord Cockburu, <eii...
