ON JUDGES. [Newspaper Article] — The Capricornian — 26 June 1875

OKJUDaei. Judges are men with shaven frees and short logs- In ordinary file they wear striped trousers, black: vests, and tall bats. Iney drive in carriages, and lean back, and poke their hataorertheir efes, asd torn their heads slowly from wde to side. This makes them look like wax-works. A man once told me, that tbe difference between Judges and wai-works is, that Joyces «an bite, and wax-works can't. When Judges aren't ia ordinary life, they are either in Court-or in bed- Aa so one ever caw a Judge in bed, them is no use in saying anything more about that part of then lives. When they are in Court the? wear large wigs, and white neckties like cap-strings of a monthly nurse, lone sleeves, and long black or red gowns. A mtn once told me that the reason why Judges wear aD these things is to bide as am* *f themselves a* possible, for tbe less we see of Judges the better. Judges are made of the wisest and most honourable mentiiateanliebougbt for ready money. It is sometimes hard to get...

Tbe measure referred to tras shown to be quite unequal to the exigencies of the situation. Mr. King, in moving tbe second reading, certainly referred to die pestilence which bas been for months past stalking through die city, but the chief object of the bill evidently was die protection of Queen street properties. Honorable members were told that the object was to construct a. drain at the back of Queen-street to carry off the flood water, but of die value of die land or cost of the drain no estimate was given.
