OUTRAGE BY QUEENSLAND BLACKS. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 1 March 1879

OUTRAGE BY QUEENSLAND BLACKS. (FROM THE COOKTOWN COURIER, FEB. 8) Early on Thursday, the 6th inst., Captain Sykes and Mr Hartley determined upon making an excursion to the North Shore, in order, if possible, to recover a valuable cedar   log lying on the beach, about five miles from the town. Being aware that the locality to which they were going was one where the blacks frequently made their appearance, they went prepared for all emergencies, taking with them a couple of revolvers. (In ap-   proaching within about half a mile from the   shore blacks were descried, and heard cooeying one to another. This of course made them more careful, and on reaching thier destination they look care to have their     revolvers in readiness; and having run the boat up close to where the log was lying, they moored her securely, and at once started   up the bank to reconnoitre. On reaching the top a party of blacks were se...

THE KNOCK AT MY DOOR, [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 15 March 1879

ITHEt KNOGCK AT MIY DOOR, No, remain. I will ask her when she returns, I answered, not wishing ihat they should speak together a Lobaiinst. 'bThe woman now returned with the , ter in a pitcher. Ithen told the man 'o go to the coroner's house, which, * I knew, happened to be but six doors off on the opposit side of the streest with a note which I scribbled pith a pencil. informing him of the death and circumstances, but not hint ing my suspiciona that the deceased had been poisoned. The man's hand trembled, and his fsoe looked as white as a sheet as I gave him the note. He would have gitred, but I authoritatively com manded him to go. He tried to ex cbange glances with the woman, but I interposed my person. I followed hims to the stairs, and saw him leave the house. I then returned to the chbamber of death, and, as I firmly believed. of crime. Oh, sir, it is such a pity ! I hope people won't suspect us. But the beat eharacters can't always keep free from slanderous tongues. You can p...

p1pxatdipt & ea Staudard PUOLISBED EVERY SATURDAY " EXOELMIOIR." ' SATURDAY, 15TH MARCH. MOST people will, we think, admit that things look anything but flourishing, whether taken in their political or com morcial aspect, and as we all know, no matter what may be the state of affairs there are always to be found croakers to look and speak only on the dark side of every question. The loan about to he floated on the London market for £3,000,000,with the understanding that a low figure only can be obtained for our securities, points to the fact that at the present time Victoria does not hold commercially so good a position in the world as formerly. Was this not the fact the capitalists at home would just as readily lend us five as three millions of money. The cause of this is by different parties placed to different cir cumstances, in many instances no doubt to suit political purposes ; but for our own part we see that not only in Via tonria is the commercial horizon clouded, h...
