ADELONG. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 6 February 1869

ADELONG. (prom our correspondent.) February 4th. — You would naturally con clude that the storm you had in Gundagai on Saturday extended to Adelong, and your conclusions would be well founded. Rain set in on Friday and after Saturday's downpour miniature lagoons were formed in our streets. During tho storm on Saturday a flash of lightning knocked down Mrs. Shindlair and child, but did not seriously injure them, and afterwards passed into the ground through the fluorof a hut about 150 feet off, on tho opposite side of a gully. This hut, which is a small one, was occupied by Mr. Harding and his wife and family, who were all at home ; but, fortunately, although they were a good deal frightened none of the inmates were injured. Another hut, a little further up the gully, was a good deal shaken at the same time, and, it is suppnEed, by the same electric visitor. The case of Sergeant Egnn v. Mack, Quigley, and party, came on again before the Police Magistrate at our Court, on Wednesday. T...

The ' IiicMan Ttepnrtcr* states that on tie 27th ult., A. G. QraviHe, Into Manager of tie Aiutrnlinn Joint Stock Bank, nt Forbes, was charged with larceny. The evidence showed that on the arrival of Mr. Adams, branch inspector of the B;ink, he found that there was a large, deficiency in the cash balance, caused by defendant having allowed customers to overdraw their accounts, and that defendant Lad likewise appropriated three sums of money namely £il on the 2Gth of July, £i3 on the 19th of August, and £65 on the 15th August of lust year, such money being the property of the Bank. It was stated that no Branch Managers had a right to allow overdraft, even for small sums, without the consent of the Board of Directors ; but it was admitted, as a matter of fact, that they were in the habit of allowing respectable customers occasionally to overdraw. Dr Belinfante, for defendant, con tended that no jury could convict on this case; for, in larceny, the most important ingredient was the frlo...

TUMUT. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 6 February 1869

TWMUT. (from otm connBSPoNnENiO February 3rd. — Since I last wrote our town and district have been visited by a succession of thunderstorms, accompanied by very heavy showers. On Friday last, at Gadara and Windowie Creek, there was a severe gale of wind, much hail, dec. Largo trees were up rooted, chimneys blown down, and many movable articles, sucn as turn, sc, were car ried far down the creeks. The ground was flooded with water in all directions, and the next morning the Gilmore had changed its usual brick dust color for an inky hue, owing to the quantities of black soil carried down by the Windowie Creek. We now enjoy de lightful weather. Since the rain the usual watering place at our river has become dangerous to water-carts, owing to an accumulation of sand brought down by McFarlane's Creek, and on Wednes day last a horse of Mr. R. Dear's met with an accident there. While entering the river, for water the horse suddenly, became embedded in sand, and ere he could be released plu...

VERY DEAF. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 13 February 1869

VERY DEAF. ; In days gone by, when tho objectionable militia laws were in force in old Massachusetts, the customary draft 'was made in a, country town a few miles from Boston, and a notice to appear armed and equipped, according to law,', was left at a boarding house of a wag'who possessed very little martial music in his soul. Determined that he would neither attend rior pay .a fino and entertaining withal a verv indifferent opinion of tho utility of the 6ystem, he took no notice of the summons, by which he rendered himself liable to a fino. Having fixed upon a final plan to dodgo the issue, at the appointed hour he waited upon the said court, to show cause, if any he had, why he shouldn't willingly havo toted a musket and knapsack about the town for twelve mortal hours, and othenvise perform the legal annual duties of a live patriot. Ho was ushered into tho court house where ho found three or four persons seated, attired in flashy regimentals, and being duly placed before this aug...
