Registrar's Office moved to new location .. . .„ ..,«. IJ «J photo by Jettery Miller New location of Registrar's office across Jordan Road. by Mike Frawley managing editor This past summer was a busy time at Penn Slate Behrend. Students returning to campus found that many renovations had taken place over the summer. One of the most important for students was the changing location of the Registrar's office. John Ream, Director of Operations for Behrend, said, "The main reason for the move of the Registrar's Office was to provide space for a badly needed classroom in the Otto Behrend Science Building." Also a consideration in the move was the growing size of the school and the cramped space in which the office had been previously located. The Registrar's Office was moved to a building across Jordan Road. Diane Nowacinski, Registration Coordinator, said, "We had outgrown our old facility. We had been there for the past thirteen years." This new location gives the Registrar's ...

New programs have great impact on incoming freshmen [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 3 September 1999

New programs have great impact on incoming freshmen by Mike Frawley managing editor The start of the new school year has brought many changes to Behrend. One change, that has a great impact on the class of incoming freshmen, is the newly created Freshman Seminar program and its partner program, the First-Year Interest Groups. The purpose of the Freshman Seminar program is to give students a chance to learn more about their chosen field, while working closely with other freshmen with the same interests. Each of the schools at Behrend have their own seminars, with educational goals that correspond to their individual fields of study. These goals include increasing skills associated with the fields of study in the seminars, exploring job opportunities within their field, and to promote a better understanding of what is involved with each field of study. It is hoped that this program will give students direction in choosing a field of study and their future careers. The First Ye...

SMITH FAMILY GIVES CHAPEL, BELL TOWER TO BEHREND The Larry V. Smith family has made a gift to build a multi-faith chapel and bell tower that will contribute substantially to the spiritual dimension of a Penn State Behrend education. The $3 million project will be funded by gifts for the bell tower from the late Floyd "Smitty" Smith and his wife, Juanita, and for the chapel by Larry V. Smith, his Kathryn, and their children. Smith, owner of Automation Devices, Inc. in Fairview, said that he and his wife decided to build a chapel for the College several years ago, when he was dealing with health problems. "We experienced tremendous support from family and friends at that time and made the commitment to fund the chapel in the future," he said. "We're happy we could honor our commitment." A statement developed by faculty, staff, and students calls for the chapel's design to "inspire reverence, awe, contemplation, and peace." Early plans envision the chapel with not only a flexi...

Do we really need to pay? [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 3 September 1999

Do we really need to pay? A view from the lighthouse With student enrollment up to an all time high, does Penn State really need to be charging us extra for things and not making improvements to existing facilites? And no. we are not talking about the improvements to the dorms. The computer fee went up along with basic tuition costs. We have not seen the effects of the extra money that came into the computer labs. New equipment? Nope, none that we have seen yet. Where did it go? Computer costs go up every year, or so we were told. However, when planning finances for the upcoming year, not all of us take into account for inflation. Sneaking costs up on us is not the way to go. And posting notices in the Bursar's office is not "letting us know". Tuition up 4 percent, why, besides inflation? With all the extra students that came in, does the school really need that much money from us? We were under the impression that all the dorms they were building were pa...

Procrastination, bad habit or life-saving technique? [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 3 September 1999

Procrastination, bad habit or life-saving technique? Detours and Small Potatoes So another semester at Behrend, eh? Or perhaps your first. I'm pretty sure that everyone is giving you advice, "Don't do this, take this class, NEVER eat there!" Well I have some advice for you too. So why should my advice (i.e. my opinion) mean anything to you? Because it applies to everyone (calm down this isn't the sunscreen song). Procrastination is a word that I am sure is in most of our vocabularies. Some people do it, but only a little bit. Some people never do it. Then there are some people, like myself that RELISH in it! I may be the queen of procrastination. As a matter of fact, as I am writing this I am two and a half hours past my self-imposed deadline. How's that for waiting until the last minute? The point is that some people think that procrastination is bad, but it's NOT, here's why. Last semester (my first at Behrend, my first with a roommate) I discovered the importance of moder...
