JTe rapped for admittance, when the following dialogue ensued : Judge i4I desire admittance." Wife "You cannot come in here until you change your politics." Jvulge "I cannot do that." Vftfe "Well, you cannot come in then." The judge then decended, remained below about an hour, waiting for his wife to repent and revoke her cruel decision. He then returned and rapped. I Heard something about it the other day, which I eau not refrain from publishing, by way of illustration. Clay county. Missouri, had a voting population of 2,500 before the war. A lull regiment of these entered the federal service, and went through the entire struggle, aud wlu:t was left of it came home at the close of it. There are now about 3,000 rotors in the county. At the last election two hundred and fifty were allowed to exercise the riht of suffrage, under the test oath and registry laws. The rest, 2,750, wore excluded as "rebels," though' many of them had been all through the war on the union side! Aud the best of the joke is that the indiuidual who sat in judgment upon...

Jenklu In Washington. Since the remarkable blossoming ot reporters' genius which occurred at the time of General Scott's funeral, there have been few oecassioos on which the shallow depths of the newspaper Jenkins have been fairly stirred up. The impeachment excitement however, threatens to develope repotoiial fertility and inaptitude of expression to an alarming extent. Tlio Washington c "rerpondent of the Tribune in this morning's issue ofthat paper, certainly threatens toequal the magniloquent bosh which was roused by the disease of the late lieutenant-general. He says, speaking of the debate in the boost yesterday : 11 The copperhead Phelps of Maryland, then flung himself into the impeachment torrent, to stem it, with a speech which lunged on the rottou sophism," &c. "And now I say that not only these bonds are payable in legal tender, but that they ought to be paid as soon as it is possible to do so. T do not know that it is possible to pay these bonds as fast as they mature, even in currency ; but I do know that every possible effort ought to be made to do it. I I A Remarkable Discovery is KANSAS. At Nelawaka,in Kansas, in digging a well, pieces of charred timber were found at the depth of 6) feet. The Atchison Patriot mjs tüey were imbedded in a bed of earth formed of clay niised with smooth eand and gravel. Between th3 surface of the earth and these deposit the workmen had o dig through beds of flay of the closest texture and hardest compaction; as well as layers of limestone. One of these pieces of timber shows evidence that cannot be doubted of haying been cut with a sharp instrument. This wae found at a depth of 62 feet. It, as well as some other places, is well preserved, and tells its own convincing, yet brief tory of a former people and a former civilization. But the cod is not yet. The workmen , in their laborious progress, have reached a depth of 70 feet, and are digging through a stratum of black loam. of soil posesaing all tho elements of fertility, and which was "dry land" before the waters deluged it and swept over it as wit...
