MEETING OF THE UNION AGR . SOCIETY . Immediately upon the adjournment of the meeting of the executive comriiittee , the Union Agricultural Society was called to order , President Ellsworth in the chair . The president made a few happy remarks , congratulating the society upon its flourishing condition , the increased interest felt in its welfare by our farmers , which assured him that efforts would not be wanting to make the next fair one of interest and profit to the cultivators of the soil . The committee appointed to confer with the Mechanics Institute of the city of Chicago reported through the corresponding secretary That on account of the lateness of the 1 season they would prefer to defer holding a fair until the following year , as many articles which they would wish to offer for exhibition required more time for their co / ripletiou than could now be allowed . These and other considerations of less importance induced the belief that it would best promote the objects Hi view to give more ample time to prepare for ...

SOD-PLOWING-STJB-SOIL PLOW . [Newspaper Article] — Prairie Farmer — 1 August 1845

SOD-PLOWING-STJB-SOIL PLOW . [ For the Prairie Farmer . BY ABRAHAM SMITH . MESSRS . EDITORS : I have found by experience that a sub-soil plow , is absolutely necessary . Accordingly , as I had nothing better I have used a common prairie plow , and with it turned a furrow three inches in depth from ( the bottom of the sod furrow . This ,, turned on top of the inverted sod , is the finest bed for corn , any kind of small grain , turnips , or grass . One who has not seen the process will hardly believe what a fine bed , and so pliant to the harrow—if it dont fetch buckwhear , turnips , and timothy in grand style , then I shall be mistaken . , PLOW MAKERS ! Can you make me a . plow that will turn two furrows and lay the sub-sod furrow flat on top of the sod furrow , drilling corn between the two furrows . I have used a common prairie plow to throw out the sub-soil furrow , but it is not quite the thing ; the principal fault is that it will not throw the , furrow far enough . I shall mak...

CHICAGO MARKET [Newspaper Article] — Prairie Farmer — 1 August 1845

CHICAGO MARKET Prairie Farmer Office , July 26 , 1845 . Since our last there is a material change iu the wheat market—the anticipation of a new crop having knocked off about 20 cents on the bushel , Our quotations are 62 to 65 , with rather a downward tendency . Very little is however offered . Wc do not think farmers need be in haste to sell at low prices . Causes adverted to in our last must have some effect on the market ultimately . Oats are without a price—the old crop being exhausted and the new not yet in . ¦ . • . Wool is firm at our quotations . The sales of horses have been livelier than usual during the past month , and very few are now in the market , though prices do not . vary .

CROPS IN THE WEST . [Newspaper Article] — Prairie Farmer — 1 August 1845

CROPS IN THE WEST . The wheat iri the southern counties of Illinois was a . little injured by the heavy rains . About the time many farmers wished to commence their harvest , rains set in and continued almost incessantly for two to three weeks . We saw one field and heard of others , where the heads of standing wheat were green with sprouts an inch or more in length . We never saw or heard of a like instance . Yet the crop there is a good one—much above the average . - In northern Illinois and Indiana , all Wisconsin , and Iowa , the crop is a good one and the quality excellent . We think in the Western States and Territories the yield is at least 25 per cent ., probably 33 per cent . over , any previous year , and ^ as a whole it is of better quality . - . -. i ; : . ¦ In our travels through northern and central Illinois , we have been amused to see how strong the desire is to have a short crop elsewhere , that we may get a good price . The frost , rains , and rusthad ddhe great da...
