It Is an Obligation . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 13 February 1902
It Is an Obligation . BHE Iowa Agricultural College lias done more for tlie state in which it is located than Iowa has ever attempted or pretended to do for the Institution . The college has given the Hawkeyc state an international reputation for progressiveness and enterprise . Ames is as well known as Des Moines or Dubuque , merely because it is the location of the college . Xot only is the institution eiving the youth of the state an education that fits them well for the exigencies of life but its feeding , breeding , and other experiments have been of vast benefit to the live stock industry of the whole United States . The attitude of the people of the state toward the college is unequivocal , and the legislators at Des Moines must pursue no cheese-paring policy in framing appropriations . All that the I . A . C . needs the great state of Iowa can well afford and no penny wise and pound foolish policy should be pufsued at Des Moines . When the management of the Union Stock Yard ...
Winners of the Spoor Trophy . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 13 February 1902
Winners of the Spoor Trophy . DN another column will be found photographs of the team of the Iowa Agricultural College that won the magnificent Spoor trophy at the Interna ? - tional Exposition last fall , together with a good picture of the trophy itself which now forms an attraction in Agricultural Hall at Ames . These students won first honors in judging horses , cattle , sheep aud swine and with them the trophy . James Peter , of Berkley , Gloucestershire , the English Judge at tlie International Live Stock Exposition , said at that time : I was greatly interested by the exhibits seat by your experiment stations , aud was especially struck by thos 3 of the Iowa Agricultural College . Whoever is responsible for the management of the live stock department at tbis seat of learning is well wcrthy of the confidence of the state that he represents . I sincerely trust that his pupils will eaiuiate his success in after life . I am only sorry that time did not permit my visiting some of ...
"^ fatxttng' Wood and Digging 'Battr [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 13 February 1902
^ fatxttng Wood and Digging Battr DOWA is not noted for its timber , but they say her people are great on sawing wood , as the saying goes . Also on digging bait Speaking about digging bait , Red-nosed Pete says Iowans cant get it—the kind of bait he means—without chasing into a blind pig sty , or getting it in original packages , which the Live Stock World refuses to advertise at any price . Look at a map and note what a state of square counties is Iowa . Her people are just as square . Iowans are as busy a lot as you will find in the whole bunch of states . Out of the ninety and nine counties you cant point to a l-eally poor one . If Iowa was a hotel the clerks would have no trouble in giving people light , front rooms . If Iowa was a carcass of beef the matcher would be able to sell it nearly all for porterhouse , sirloin and rib roasts . There would be mighty little chuck or waste of any kind . . If Iowa was a piece of timber it would grade as number one , sound , straight and f...

VETERINARY DEPARTMENT [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 13 February 1902
VETERINARY DEPARTMENT Editor DATLT LIVE STOCK W ORLD :- Myself and neighbors have a disease among our cattle that nobody around here can tell us anything about . My neighbors started early in the fall and mine about December 20 th . They get lame on hind leg some on both . First thing we noticed was their rundown , poor condition . Their feet around towards the hoof swell and finally crack and drop off at first Joint some at second joint . I have killed ono and seven died , have about fourteen more affected . I have written to tho Stata Veterinary but it seems we aro not on tho right track so thought we would write to you . I think it must be in their system the way they act , and it is very painful . Do yon think it contagious ? If so it comes on very slowly . Can you give any remedy ? Does lt affect fattening cattle ? Please let me hear from you as soon as possible . Any light you can give me will be greatly appreciated . Respectfully , Louis Jacobs . Your State Veternarian should...
