I AGRICULTURAL ] SCIENCE [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 30 March 1907

I AGRICULTURAL ] SCIENCE THE COUNTRY SCHOOL . HOUSE . I have just read with interest and pleasure the bulletin on centralization of schools prepared by Prof . A . B . Graham , and issued by the agricultural Extension Department of the Ohio State University . While I am in hearty sympathy with this growing movement , I wish to ofter a protest against the hasty sale of the abandoned school houses . As a place for schooling the youth the little redbrick school house has probably served its day ; but as a place for adult education , where the farmers and their wives may assemble . for the interchange of thought and the elevation of sentiment , the school house has possibilities which have seldom been realized . In pioneer times the school house was the social center for the neighborhood . Spelling bees , debating clubs , singing schools and magic lantern shows were usually held at the school house , and were rightly regarded as educational in the broadest sense of the term . In the proc...

The Story ofa Medicine . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 30 March 1907

The Story ofa Medicine . Its name— Golden Medical Discovery was suggested by ono of its most important and valuable ingredients — Golden Seal root . Nearly forty years ago , Dr . Pierce discovered that he could , by the use of pure , triple-refined glycerine , aided by a certain degree of constantly maintained heat and with the aid of apparatus and appliances designed for that purpose , extract from our most valuable native medicinal roots their curative properties much better than by tho use of alcohol , so generally employed . So the now worldfamed Golden Medical Discovery , for the cure of weak stomach , indigestion , or dyspepsia , torpid liver , or biliousness and kindred derangements was first made , aa it ever sinie has Mum , without a particle of alcohol in its maHe-up . A glance \ ijii ^ tafij [ ujJ list of its Ingredients , prlntea on * i } verv bottle-wrapper , will show that It Is maoe from the most valuable medicinal ro & ts \ found growing In our American f...

D Timely Warning Against I MAIL ORDER I Q I CREAM SEPARATORS B I The Farm Implement News of Chicago quotes the following good advice to dairy farmers from a lecture by Prof . C . E . Lee of the University of Illinois State Experiment Station : I am not at liberty to give my preference , for I am not selling separators—If I were to name a separator manufacturer , either to you here in public or In private , I would lose my position—but ^ vV there Is one thing I desire to warn you farmers against . nnd that is PI K * M buying hand separators from the mail order houses . Dont do It KiJH —you wlll regret It . The machines do not give results and they do not last . Our department receives hundreds of Inquiries as to Whats the matter with my separator ? It doesnt do this or It doesnt do that , and I tell you , gentlemen , that In every Instance when we ask them to name their separator It Is a mall order * house machine and almost worthless when It was new . • fl Dont waste your money in a...

IHORTICILTIREI [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 30 March 1907

IHORTICILTIREI VARIETIES OF PEACHES FOR CENTRAL OHIO . Six years ago I planted eight acres in peaches on my farm in Licking county , near Newark . The orchard contained 1 , 150 trees and the selection of varieties was based on my experience in marketing the peaches from two previous orchards that had been on the farm . The orchard has now fruited twice and in going over these varieties in making up a list of 1 , 000 trees that I expect to plant this spring , it has occurred to me that my experience with the varieties that I have been growing might be of interest to others who are making up lists for planting this spring . In making up the list I endeavored to get a succession of varieties throughout the season since our fruit is marketed principally on a local market and it was necessary to have a succession of varieties so as to hold the trade throughout the season and to avoid having more fruit ripen at any one time than * we could handle conveniently . The varieties are given in ...

Food Poisons . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 30 March 1907

Food Poisons . 90 Percent of AU Diseases the Result of Undigested Putrefying Foods . Men of affairs , women of society and children with active brains are too often sedentary in their habits , giving little time to exercise . To this evil is added that of high and irregular living—as a result , the stomach can not stand the demands made upon it . The abused and overtaxed stomach does not properly do the work of digestion , food taken iu ferments and the poison permeates tlie whole system . The body loses in weight and becomes a prey for the attack of whatever disease it may encounter . Did it ever occur to you how busy that stomach of yours is ? It only holds three pints , but in one year you force it to take in 2 , 400 pounds of material , digest it and prepare it for assimilation into tlie blood . No wonder it rebels when overworked . We crowd it with steaks and pastry , irritate its juices with spices and acids , and expect the stomach to do its work . It cant do it . All over th...
