Reports from the TanmiLolmatoiy [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 March 1915

Reports from the TanmiLolmatoiy ExraWMENT STATIONS Farm Bureau Employs Woman Expert In Erie County , New York , a woman has been engaged for Home Economics work in connection with the County Farm Bureau . So far as we know , this is the first county in the Northern States to employ regularly a woman for this type of work . We recently asked County Agent W . L . Markham of Erie County to send us a brief notice regarding the development of this type of work and from him we have received the following information : Believing that I saw great possibilities for a splendid work that could be done by a Home Economics Department in connection with a Farm Bureau , permission was granted by the executive committee of the Erie County Farm Bureau to establish such a department in charge of a competent woman , provided I could raise the funds to carry on the work long enough to demonstrate its practicability . It took only a few days work among the banks and business interests of the county to r...

ORCHARD l AND , PARPEN [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 March 1915

ORCHARD l AND , PARPEN Now is the Time to Prune Peach Trees W HEN is the proper time to prune peach trees ? This is a question frequently asked of the United States Department of Agriculture s specialists . In general , the answer is : During the dormant period , preferably late winter or early spring , just before growth starts . This is true except in regions where bleeding from wounds is likely to occur , when it should probably be done in early winter . But if the fruit buds are endangered during the winter by adverse temperatures , it may be advisable _ to delay _ pruning as much as economic conditions permit until settled spring weather arrives . This is especially advisable if heavy heading in of the previous season s growth is involved , since the proportion...

YOUNG FARM FOLKS [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 March 1915

YOUNG FARM FOLKS The Editors Letter Dear Boys and Girls—I wonder if you have caught as yet that terrible laiy but sweet and dreamy disease known as spring fever ? I must confess that I have had touches And twinges of it already , and it is before the first of March that I am writing this . Spring has been most prominently in the air these last few days , and particularly under foot , tor the walks and crossings have looked like young rivers with all the importance of the Mississippi about them . These next two months are going to be wonderful ones for all sorts of plans and dreams ; out of all this planning and dreaming that goes on as surely in the minds of the boys and girls , as the coming of spring itself , who knows but what some big thought or purpose or important thing is going to result , some day in the future ? One thing that I am immensely interested in is the school garden . If you have a county adviser , you are in a fine position to start such a thing this year . Of co...
