The bibrapy . Dr . E . C . Richardson , Librarian of Princeton University , recently spoke at the University of Pennsylvania on College and University Libraries . The speakeV gave an account of the growth of these libraries in America , there now being eight with a collection of over 100 , 000 volumes . These are Harvard , 488 , 800 ; Chicago , 306 , 000 ; Columbia , 250 , 000 ; Yale , 210 , 000 ; Cornell , 200 , 000 ; Pennsylvania and Princeton , 135 , 000 each , and Michigan , 104 , 000 . Of these the most rapid growth among the older institutions has been the University of Pennsylvania library which had only 23 , 000 volumes in i 860 . The Harvard library leads all the others in size , value and efficiency of administration , coming nearest to the half a-million volume limit which he placed as the lowest consistent working basis for a university library , the income for which should also be not less than 540 , 000 or £ 50 , 000 a year . mass meeting of Students . Last Saturday afternoon at one o clock a mass meeting of students was held in Philo Hall for the purpose of electing alumni and undergraduates to the Pen and Sword Society . Rev . Alleman announced to the meeting the names of nine alumni who were nominated by the members of the Pen and Sword , also stating that if any one present desired to vote for any alumnus not included in this list he was at liberty to do so . After voting for alumni members the undergraduates who were deemed worthy to election to Pen and Sword were balloted for . Every man present voting for ab many undergraduates as he thought had done something for the college , deserving of an election to Pen and Sword . SOCIETIES . PIIILO . The program last Friday night was very well rendered and was quite an improvement on several of the preceeding ones . The pcrformeis were : Baker , Essay ; Koser , Declamation ; Long , Essay ; Gross , Declamation ; Hightman , Essay ; _Kohlcr and Moore debated the affirmation side of the question , Should Quay be prevented from holding any political office ? Th _« Special V . M- C . A . _Meetings . The series of special meetings , arranged for by the College Y . M . C , A . and conducted by Mr . Sayford , closed last Thursday evening . There was a large crowd out at every one of the four meetings to hear Mr . Sayford , and certainly no one listened to his addresses who was not greatly benefited . His confidential talk to young men on Thursday afternoon was especially a strong and well-worded one . He handled very carefully the subject of college vices such as swearing , drinking , gambling , etc ., and also the practices of smoking and dancing in such a way . as not to offend any one , but he convinced all of the immense danger there is in these habits _. Athletics among the Colleges . A new regulation has been passed at Columbia requiring football and crew men to make a total strength test of 700 or over . Base-ball and men on class teams must make 600 points and men in track athletics , lacrosse pnd tennis 500 points . The Harvard track men have outlined an attractive season s work . An indoor track meet , the first one in some years , will be held on February 11 tli . The class games will be held on April 15 th . There will not be any regular University meet , but an open set of games will take its place . The Cuban Educational Association has been oiganized for the purpose of accepting and carrying out the oilers made by American colleges to give free tuition to two or more reputable Cuban students each . The Association has announced that the responses received from Cubans desiring to accept these offers are numerous , but the allottmerits include only young Cubans who can pay their own board and incidental expenses . No young men will be allotted , who do not promise to make their home in Cuba after their education in the United States . Columbia College , N . Y ., is supposed to be worth $ 30 , 000 , 000 .
