MEADE COUNTY NEWS John D. Wehrle, Pub. MEADE, KANSAS. The Music of Man and Birds. If the discovery of Independent evo lutions of human music all tending in the same direction indicates the exist ence of an ideal standard toward which progress leads, how much stronger is the evidence afforded by the fact that bird music Is developing tlong the same lines? It seems a far cry from a Beethoven symphony or a Wagnerian opera to the simple lay of a sparrow, but as we trace the course of the mighty river of music back to ward its source, the stream becomes narrower and narrower, until it is con tracted to a point where it - is no broader than the little rill of bird music, says Henry Oldys in Harper's Magazine. Nor does the decrease stop there; for, remarkable as it may seem, there wae a time when the music from which ours has been evolved was inferior to some of that which floats to our ears from the woods of spring. This is not to say merely that the songs of certain of the birds involve ...

Town Belle Criticised. A town belle got off the train at a small town between Atchison and To peka last night,' says Ed Howe. She shook hands with her left hand, wore a larger hat than the girls who met her, wore pretty loud clothes, chewed gum and when she hit the cinder plat form of her home town a lot of people grinned at her and said: "Hello, there!" MEADE COUNTY NEWS John D. Wehrle, Pub. MEADE, KANSAS. The Life Romantic . "Why is it," asks the North Ameri can Review, "that in middle age the novel so palls upon us, while we turn instinctively to biography and letters, or to poetry and history for our lighter reading? It sems a fact too readily overlooked that the very form of life's romance changes with the . years. It Is undoubtedly a provision of nature that the emotional life should be paramount from 18 to 30; but surely the glamor shed about the amative relations begins to wane with middle age, and we find either new food for the life romantic or we settle into a dull routine of recurrent occupations. It is then that persona! optimism and pessimism are put to the test. To let the sweeping pageant of life become all drab and dreary is to admit failure in life, and to live with ever-Increasing zest and interest ij to have captured success. The greatest free gift of the years is im personality. That voracious interest in oursel...

MEADE COUNTY NEWS John D. Wehrle, Pub. MEADE, - - . KANSAS. The Straphanger in London. With the introduction of the Ameri can electric railroad system in Great Britain, the straphanger at once loomed large in the street, car. The Englishman, as everybody knows, ob jects to being crowded, and so parlia ment has been called upon to end the strapbanging "nuisance." A bill has been introduced in the house of com mons, says Baltimore Sun, and if it is passed there will henceforth be no straphangers. The Englishman who rides in a street car will be sure of a seat. The aisles will be kept clear. There will be no overcrowding. In matters relating to their personal comfort Englishmen seem to be very exacting. Why shouldn't the strap hanger be welcomed as a manifesta tion of thb age of hustle, bustle and the de'il take the hindmost? The Txmdoners show how much they are behind the times when tbey insist upon excluding from a street car evsry person who cannot get a seat. They are slow, very sl...
