hii inniBWWM.)iji!i ilia towfcocefcliettotowAiagaKiadn Akizona Sentinel. SATURDAY, - - OCTOBER 19, 1878 It is greatly to be regretted that Mr. A. E, Davis can not come into Yuma County before the election. There are many voters here who have never seen or heard him, and who are likely to attribute to political zeal any com parisons in Davis' favor that may Ue made, by his friends, between the qualifications of the different candidates for Congress. But the raason given by Mr. Davis is good. Though an old resident of Arizona, he has never seen the eastern part of this Territory, which has been settled only with in the past two or three years. A Delegate to Congress should be familiar with every part of his Territory; this qualification Mr. Davis is now completing. With the County of Yuma he has. been familiar for many years; with its newer people he can become well acquainted after the election. He could make many votes by com ing here before that; but he is dis charging a plain duty...

rn!,! n'HiWtfi.i uijWrt'JJ '--g Arizona Sentinel. SATURDAY, - - OCTOBER 26, 1878 The friends of Mr. A. E. Davis have been greatly surprised by the rapidity with which public sentiment is turning- in favor of his election as Delegate to Con gress. This change is difficult of explanation, but its occurrence is now too palpable to be denied. His fitness for the position has never been questioned; but his friends, for a long time, agreed with even the opponents of Mr. Stevens, that the latter gentle man would control the Territory, and that other candidates had no chance of defeating him. It was conceded that no candidate could be elected unless he had plenty of money and would spend it as if Arizona votes are merchandise, to be bought and sold! One mouth ago Mr. Davis could not have counted on more than fifty votes in Yuma Countyj to-day his strength here is formidable, and is increasing. There is a strong opposition to Mr. Stevens in Pima County; for a time this opposition supported M...

A trifling quantity of beef is to be doled out to the Indians, to keep them through the winter. At last the work animals of the Reserve are to have some grain; ten tons of barley going up there on to day's boat. A school house is to be built, and authority has- been given for starting it boarding school under' charge of a teacher at $900 a year, a matron at S3G0, and a cook at $300. As these em ployees will have to board them selves, it is doubtful whether this boarding school.prujectcan be car ried out. The idea, however, is a good one.- Only by segregating the Indian children from the bad example and contact of their rela tives can they be taught that per sonal cleanliness so necessary to effective civilization. Arizona Sentinel. SATURDAY, - KOTEMBER 9. 1878 The Heart of Arizona. To those who have learned to look on Arizona as a country des titute of timber and embellished chiefly by thorns and cacti, it will be a pleasnnt surprise to hear of the great variety and beauty of timber and vegetation found in those parts of the Territory which are blessed by a copious rainfall. One of the most attractive of these parts is that lying: between Verde and Apache and at the southern edge of the great pine-clad 3Idgo llones 3Iesa. This mesa underlies a pine forest of considerable width and several hundred miles long. Its pines appeared to us to be of some variety between yellow and sugar pine; the wood is soft and splits well into very fair ahakesj they are of as fine a growth as any pines we ever saw "down East." On the mesa and south of it are found firs eight feet in diameter, magnificent trees; quaking poplar (asp), in moist places, eighteen inches to two feet through, run ning up eighty and one h...

A.eizona Sentinel. SATURDAY, - NO YEiUiER 16, 187S Ben Butler is still looking for the man who advised him to send for Kearney. The arrival here, last Monday, of a car-load of oak, poplar and other wagon timber for the U. S. Quartermaster at Yuma Depot, indicates construction of more ambulances. The value of this climate for thoroughly seasoning timber is beginning to be univer sally admitted. It is more than likely that all wagons hereafter required for the Military Depart ment of Arizona will be built here. The Southern Pacific Rail road Company is said to be se riously contemplating the erec tion of extensive shops here for the manufacture of passenger cars. The wonderful dryness of the air seasons timber so thorough ly as to place it for all time be yond risk of shrinkage or check ing. This consideration is an im portant one in building cars that cost five or six thousand dollars each. Republican victories in the late elections at the East have done much to consolidate the party...
