Ft is not unprofitable for us upstarts of a century or two to temper our national vanity by obtaining a "realizing sense" of the many worthy and ycnerable dignitics'of its "old" and of the great promise, scarcely less than that of this great nation, of its "new." Tlie catholic-minded editor of Old and Xeic, always on the watch for lessons of this teaching, has *0\ failcal to seize upon so remarkable an occasion as this visit of the present embassy from the " Yankees of the East," and we may quote from what will appear in the April issue of that monthly as its introduction, as putting all this in a most striking light: "The Japanese Embassy has, befare this time, proved to our people, what it is so difficult to make our people understand, that one civilized nation is, in this case, dealing with anothe...

The Enquirer of this morning has a two-column editorial upon the "Tariff," in which it displays a very proper interest in lliis great question. It states the leading free-trade arguments, an J especially compliments and quotes Mr. Crossland, of Kentucky, for his recent _poech in Congress. It, however, reminds its readers "that there is another side ; that while protection is essential in a purely manufacturing community, it is oppressive and unjust to an agricultural one." No...

dvening £tate fownat. FRIDAY KVEMNG, MAR. 20, 1872. Reform and a National University. It is exhaustive and unanswerable. We quote the following in which that distinguished reformer, Senator Trumbull, is gently reminded of his own large responsibility for the defective condition of the civil service : "For such evils as spring from the laws regulating our civil service, of course, the legislative and not the executive department of the government must be held responsible, if the laws are not what they ought to be, Congress should amend them ; the President cannot. And for all such evils, I must add, no one man has incurred so heavy responsibility as the honorable Senator from Illinois. The reasons are obvious. For many years before he took his seat in the Senate he was a distinguished member of that profession whose especial business it is to know the laws. There is but one member of this body who is his senior in Senatorial service. And more than all, Tor the last eleven rears, lie ...

(Evening £tate gmmral SATURDAY EVENING, MAR. 30,1872. So many absurd jokes have been poked at Horace' Greeley and the unfortunate commissioner, that it does one pood to find something of the funny kind to come up for real. At least it is said that the following epistle, addressed to the distinguished author of "What I Know About Farming," by a Pittsburgcr and constituent of General Ncgley, is an ''over true talc." If it does not fetch the gooseberries and the hairy caterpillars, it is evident the three gentlemen named will have no heart for the genuine, unsophisticated farmers who look up to them with such unhesitating trustfulness with any really new idea is to be brought out". But we must let Mr. John Sikes speak for himself: To Iloraco Greely: Sur, As Uno all about farmin 1 konkluded to ask your advise about a nu sort of gosehurry 1 red of in a paper which a torn Hood rote about.— He scs a torn Frost sed to a horticultral society a - follows: "I partickly wish the saeiety to be c...
