WOMEN AS WINDOWS. Observations and K flections by Ella Wheeler Wilcox. The French say "Woman is the win- dow through wbich man sees life." This 1 belieTe to be true. I at one time was obliged to associate with seme intellectual women who did not know how to be am'able and my experience withthem seems like a painful dream j -in recompense iiienas since given m companiouship with two adorably ami- i able women. One of them has recently . passed on to a new phase of existence. God rest her sweet soul ! She lived 65 . years to prove herself a benediction to every life wbich even temporarily touched her own. She was a fragrant flower in the gnrden of girlhood. As a wife she transformed a despondent rest- i less and discontented man into an agree- able and optimistic husband. Children who were nervous invalids she gave .cheerful views of life and caused them to laugh themselves into good health. REVIVING A GREAT CANAL PROJECT. s -MANUFACTURER OF- A National Water Highway From The Mississippi to SAENTOR THURSTON'S PLAN. it Is Proposed to Invest Postal Savings Bank Funds in In- terest Bearing Canal Bonds. Senator John M. Thurston says he has a proposition to make for the dis- posal of the postal savings funds if a postal bank bill should jjo to cod press. The reinvestment of the deposits is the stumbling block in the path of the bill he say. To invest the money in our interest bearing bonds Is at best only a temporary expedient. Mr. Thurston wants the money put into a great sys- tem of international improvements which will give the commerce of the west a waterway from the Mississippi river to the Atlantic seahord. Mr. Thurston would revive the Hen- nepin canal project. But he would go farther than the advocates of that canal. They wanted the government TIIK CANAL ROUTE to appropriate 96000000 or $8000000 for a canal from Hennepin on the Illinois river to some point west or no...

M. AINS A WHOLESALE Grocer and Importer 113 OVERLAND STREET EL PASO TEXAS. A REQUIEM. How proudly on that January day Bound for Havana sailed the Maine away! The Maine that now finds her myster- ious grave. Where Spanish guns frown o'er th' eoshrouriini; wave. Treachery? We charge it not. We bide our time To learn the truth of dread mishap or crime. Toll bells! And churches lift your re- quiem strain For the brave souls that perished with the Maine! We bide our time. In darkoess came the blow. In light sball come that which we seetc te know. Rest oh ye Bailors of our blood who sleep In sudden graves beneath a hostile deep. Best ye in peace! The secret of your fate It will be known. Not now for threats or hate Or mad suspicion of appalling crime Bat on the truth to act. We bide our time. Republic. Au Obliging Kiver.
