New South Wales. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 30 November 1849

New South Wales. "WE resume our precis of news received irom Sydney. The Herald says There arc many erroneous opinions afloat as to the number of people who have left Sydney for California; it is by no means uncommon to hear it asserted that hundreds of immigrants whose passages have been paid by the colony have «-one there. On referring to the Shipping Gazette we find that twelve vessels have sailed from Sydney to the gold coast, and the total number of passen- gers by them, including women and children, was two hundred and ninety-nine. The exact propor- tion of these persons who came out at the expense of the colony it is difficult to estimate, but a very large number of them certainly did not. Any one who is intimately acquainted with the colony will upon looting through the lists of names recognize A' " i a great many who it is well known came out at their own expense; and upon the best consideration we can give to the subject we believe that not more than one hundred, probably ...

Progress of Australian Vine Culture. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 7 December 1849

Progress of Australian Vine Culture. Erom the Statistical Returns of New South Wales for the year 1848, we take the following interesting particulars with regard to the progress of that colony in the culture of the vine : " The number of acres planted as vine- yards and the quantities, in gallons, of wine and brandy produced in the last six years, were as follows Gallons. Acres. Wine. Urandy. 1843. 512. 33,915. 751 1844. 566. 50,666.1,018 1845. 648. 55,210.1,433 1846. 827. 54,967.1,383 1847.1,000. 55,335.1,432 1848. 995.103,606.1,263 It thus appears that although the quan- tity of land employed lu the culture of the vine was last year the same within five acres, as in the year preceding, yet the quantity of wine produced was nearly dou- ble, and full throe times the quantity pro- duced in the year 1843. Taking the adult population in 1843 to have been 95,000, and last year 126,000, the produce of wine in the first of these years averaged about one-third of a gallon per head ; while ...

Native Offenders. À CoRKESPONDENT writing from York, under dato the 1st instant, remarks-" Notwithstanding the rigid search after aboriginal thieves and nmr dcrcrers which His Excellency has ordered to he maintained-notwithstanding the punctuality and attention of those appointed to watch over the settlers and protect tho natives, there is j-ot prac- tised amongst the aborigines of this district, tho most cruel and revolting crimes which a savage can invent to effect the destruction of his fellows; and this too, in many instances, by men who havo been domestic servants, and therefore civilised, or at least acquainted with the enormity of the crime and its prohibition by the whites. On Thursday last, a native named "Monkey," a young man about 24i years of age, was barbarously murdered while tending a Hock of sheep at St. Aubyns, the farm E. 1*. B. Lennard, Esq. Pitcairn's Island. In publishing the following extract of a letter from Captain Worth, of IÍ.M.S. The Editor of this Journal invites the free expres- sion of the. opinions of hi* Correspondents, hut can- not he held responsible for Hiern. The name and address of the writer must accompany each com- munication. To the Editor of the " Jndependent Journal." Sir,-" The mind without doubt," says a good old writer, "feels a considerable deal of pleasure in detecting the imperfections of human nature ; and where that detection may prove beneficial to mankind, without doing an injury to any individual, to pub- lish them to the world, to point out their qualities, to place thom, by a luminous description, before the eyes of men, is, in my idea, a pleasure so far from being mis« ehic\ous, that I rather think, and 1 trust 1 ¡shall contmue to think so even in the hour of death, it is the only real mode of Uiscovering the machinations of the devil, and destroying the effects of his work/' Now it is not in my power to give a very "luminous description " of anything, but however [ must handle a...

Mr. Wakefield's "Art of Colonisation," [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 7 December 1849

Mr. Wakefield'» "Art of Colonisa- tion,.3' Mr Wakefields " View of the Art of Colonisation " embraces a wide range of questions incident to the consolidation of an inchoate community, the plan, of emi- gration, and the government of dependen- cies. Pouits of exciting interest start up on every side throughout the discussion of these questions. Our limits, however, restrict us to those topics whjch may be considered the main characteristics of the "Wakefield" system, and which have been made the subjects of fiercest contro- versy by the advocates of hostile theories. The first of these has reference to the al- lotment of land. By the ancient practice of colonial administration, planless, sys temless, and unregulated as it was, one principle seems to have been blindly adopted throughout-namely the enor moiis and indiscriminate assignment of tho soil to every applicant. This was done to a great extent by free gifts ; but even where a nominal price was affixed, the payments were general...

The Convict System. (From the Nem Zealander.) [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 7 December 1849

The Convict System. (From the Nem Zealander.) " There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philoso- phy !" The truism receives a practical il- lustration with each successive hour. There was a time when we little dreamt that transportation would engage the at- tention of a New Zealand public, other- wise than as an abstract question to be Bolved by neighboring communities of pe- nal origin ; not like our own, founded upon a firm and determined principle that under no plea or pretext whatever should convictism be tolerated as an element of society. But-as no bond, no obligation, no com- pact, either of honor or of honesty, ap- pears to be sufficiently sacred to be pre- served from the assault and battery of a ColonM Secretary of SiÄte ; and as the threat of convict inundation has gone forth, we think we cannot do better than, at such a moment* to offer a rapid sketch of convictism in its various phases, such as shall afford materials for thinking, and possib...

The Convicts. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 7 December 1849

The Convicts. WE need make no apology for again recur- ring to this subject, its importance to every individual in the colony is so great, and the   emergency so pressing, that were we to al- low it to pass with the apathy to which some among us are inclined, we should be want- ing in our duty, and we shall therefore pro- ceed with our remarks upon it. We are gratified and, we may almost say, surprised, to find that the sentiments of the great bulk of our fellow settlers are con- genial with those we have set forth, it has, however, been represented to us that, a large portion of the country residents find them- selves in a "fix," having accepted the offer of Pentonville labour which was made to them by His Excellency about twelve months' since, and that by resolutely oppo- sing the proclaming this colony a Penal Settlement, they would be "stultifying" themselves. We scarcely think this idea will bear the test of examination. Under what circumstances it was they accepte...

Free Institutions. Report of the Committee of Her Majesty's Priuy Council for Trade and Plantations on the subject of extending Representative Institutions to the Australian Colonies. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 December 1849

Free Institutions. Mcport of the Committee of Her Majesty's Privy Council for Trade and Plantations on the subject of 'extending Representative Institutions to the Australian Colonies. WE this week occupy a considerable por- tion ol' our space in laying before the pub- lic in this colony, those clauses of the above important Keport which, embodied in the Bill introduced into Parliament, are most likely to affect its interests when it shall have got out of leading strings, as containing the principles of its future con- stitution. The other portions of the He port refer principally to the separation of Port Phillip, under the name of 'Victoria,' from New South Wales, and therefore ap- pear of little import to us, even if their great length did not preclude the possibi- lity of our giving them insertion. Alto- gether, the document may be considered .a most masterly one, liberal and statesman- like in its views. It will, however, strike every person acquainted with these colo- nies, th...
