AT HEADQUARTERS. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 11 August 1900

ST HEADQUARTERS. ? * ? ? On Sunday evening last there was a good attendance at Marx Hall, the oc casion being the usual m nthly musical ente tainment, and it can be safely said that a better mu-ical programme has not been presented for many months pa-t. Comrade Pr iud has our warm congratu lations. The instrumental contribution by Messrs Beker and Connors' amateur orchestra was undoubtedly the feature of the evening, whilst the Male Voice Party's rendition of the old favorite 'Larboard Watch' was a pleasing break in the list of solos, Miss Connors and Miss .Levy gained great applause for their vocal contributions, and tht rich deep voice of Mr Meik'e was heard 10 advantage in 'The Mighty Deep.' Mr S. Barlow also contributed tw songs in ityle Fecitations by Master Davis who received an encore and Bongs by Comrades Moroney ami Proud com pleted the programme. The lecturette was supplied by Com rade Newbury, who chose for his subject ' Trades Unions and the Class War'' 'ur comrade point...

Can Mr. Lloyd Tell Us? [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 11 August 1900

©an Mr. Lloyd Tell Us? SOME members of the New castle Yi:'ilanct' Committee re cently argued that the sanitary inspector of the local council was not an independent official, see ing that the control of his bread and butter is in the hands of the big property-owners who domi nate the affairs of the council. \ .1..,--. fV-u duty of Mr. Lloyd to repo -ton an underground tank in a Darby street building, which contained some thousands of gallons of stag nant water. When the Newcastle Herald printed the report, it was made to appear that the tenant was the party responsible for the nuisance. COLONEL BELL. ON THE BULL PEN. The windy ' Bell ' wether of American capitalism in this State has written the letter printed be low as a eply to a querv concern ing the correctness or othe: wise of the horrors of the BuU Pen, which lately appeared in these columns, reprinted from our militant con temporary, the New York People. He also knows that both Republicans and Democrats are putting forth every eft -ri t ) hush up the affair. He knows that M'Kinley appointed a bogus com mission to ' enquire' into the affair, and that the report is now tied up. Story of a Socialist Paper. VI. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 11 August 1900

Story of a Socialist Paper. (By ' Otds.') VI. We landed in Newcastle, paid a week's rent in advance, and al»o paid for the cartage of our ' plant' from tbe wharf to the office ; and found ourselves about to start a newspaper in a strange place with a caDital of exactly sixnencn. Among the more pressing items of expenditure had to be reckoned the living of three men, the purchase of paper, payment for machining, postage, &c. The first issue was safely launched, and painfully enough during the first th-ee months did the concern dra» out its p-v cariouH existence. By day and by night we worked to beep its faint spark of life from flickering out for ever. To save van-hi:e — which we ' couldn't afford to pay for, anyhow — we constructed k hand-barrow, on which we carried the ' formes' to theiprinter who machined them. Often some nipper with a voin of humour in bis mischievous carcase would stop us on the road to ask if any one wa« dead. Our hand barrow suggested ambulance work. A...
