MELBOURNE. October 19. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 21 October 1870

MELBOURNE. (From our Own Correspondent.)   October 19; Rain--ceaseless, pitiless rain, is still the order of the day, and for this to be the case in the mid dle of October, after such a severe winter, is something to remember in this wonderful year of 1870. Apparently, shearing has been prosecuted under difficulties in most parts of the country up to this time, as the wool which is now arriving in, large quantities by rail shows unmistakable signs of having undergone privations in its transit. The committee of the deputation from the vari ous Shire Councils and Road Boards which lately met and waited on the Government, asking for assistance towards repairing the damages caused by floods, have by their chairman, Mr John Orr, addressed Sir. James M'Culloch in a letter, which sets forth their grievances in a quiet and business like manner. This in all probability will re open the question, and perhaps lead to a more satisfac tory arrangement of the difficulty than that arr...

INSTANTANEOUS CURE FOR SCAB IN SHEEP. To the Editor of the Benalla Ensign. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 21 October 1870

INSTANTANEOUS CURE-FOR SCAB IN SHEEP         To the Editor of the Benalla Ensign Sir,--The solution of sulphur and lime (hydro- sulphur of lime) is now pretty well known and acknowledged to be the cheapest and most reli- able cure yet discovered for scab in sheep, It is quite equal to efficiency to the old and very unscientific mixture of tobacco and sulphur ; is much cheaper and more reliable; the quality of tobacco cannot always be depended upon; sul= phur is always genuine. At this period of the year, after our sheep are shorn, all diseases of the skin to whieh they are liable are more easily cured and there is lees rsk of deteriorating the value of the. wool by soiling, whioh all dip- pings even in simple hot water are apt to do when   the staple has advaneed in growth to anyextent,. it cannot therefore be too extensivelyly known that even one dipping in the above solution is suf- ficient to cure the most inveterat...

A shocking murder has been committed at KrJibeal. near Hamilton. 'ewo Germans named repeetively Bees and Zimmerman, who were hitterts the best of friends, were drinking together. Beer, after both were drunk, bolted with a bottle of whisky which had been paid for by Zimemerman, and drank it all. Zimmerman folewed the sae, who by this time was too drunk to ofer any wet ltanoo, and beat him to death with a stick. Zimmerman was aiso too drunk to know what he was doing. An inquest was bald on the aOth inst, when, the jnry returned a verdict of wilful murder against Zimmerman. A fresh scale of charges to be made by contrao0 earveyors for valuation of improvemooents I published :-For valuation within the boundaries of proclaimed townships, 10s. WHAT MAY HAPPEN TO A MAN IN LONGWOOD. To the Editor of the Benalla Ensign. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 28 October 1870

WHAT MAY HAPPEN. TO. A MAN IN LONGWOOD.. . b the Editor of the .Ienalla Ensign. Blr,-A short time ago, whon dog poisoning was rife in Longwood, a man in the employment of Mr Younghusband, of Killeon, gave a lad in charge of the contable for threatening to poison a dog. The lad was lookd up in the wato?houeo untl our sapient local J.P. and equally sapient constable had considered the case, and after half an hour's talk, the lad was discharged with a caution. Surely this is not justice, and 1 am quite certain it is not law. As an accompaniment to the above, I have to state that on Monday mornoin last a shearer in the employment of Mr Younghusband, for refusing to work at a certain price sad strengthen. ing his refusal with a few rough words. was given in charge and locked up for some forty. eight hours, and then quietly discharged. Groeer cases of injustice I never heard of, and I think that the people connected with it will hear more of It before long. Ooinment is almo, "unnesoary. M...

SCAB AND THE INSPECTORS. To the Editor of the Benalla Ensign. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 28 October 1870

SCAB AND THE INSPECTORS. To toh Editor of Ithe Bealla Ensign. Sir,-I was much pleased at reading the loader on eosabh' your issue of the 14th inst., and quite endorse the opinions expressed therein, but fear. it has not had the desired effoot so far as some of the inspectors are concerned. In the carrying out of this, the severest act we have ever had in Victoria, I should like to see even-handed justice meted out in each district; instead of which, I find that in the Benalla district the Act to being strained to the letter if not further, with those who are under license; while in the adjoining district (Seymour) the Act as pearmte to be carried out on some stations under licenso is simply a'farce. If tl e latter district is too large for one inspec tor,' why does the Government not appoint a second - By the way, if you are not above taking a eug goestion, lot me ask you to get a map lithographed -not of the seat of war, but of the set of sab in the Benalla district, and present it...
