MISCELLANEOUS. [Newspaper Article] — Wallaroo Times — 5 July 1882

^ is from the uandle factories that' the enormous jsupply-of glycerine comes which is now a very important article rof trade. - A few yea re ago itwas wasted ; now it is sent to the manufacturing che.mist, who .purifies it by distillation and Alteration through bone charcoal, and puts it upon tbe market. It is pnt to a 'great variety of uses, many of which depend-upon it« peculiar properties of non-volatility and absorption of atmospheric moisture. Harness makers and leather workers use it in making leather pliable; it is^putintoj.gas meterB because: . it does not freeze except lit a very low temperature; modellers keep their clay studies moist with it; tobacconists sweeten chewing tabacco with' it; - and ladies apply it to tkeir bands and faces to soften the skin. Much of it goes into the manufacture of the terrible explosive nitro-glycerine, which is made by treating it with a mixture of sulphuric and nitric acid, or concentrated nitric acid. SOMETHING LIKE A RIFLE SHOT. [Newspaper Article] — Wallaroo Times — 5 July 1882

SOMETHING LIKE A EIFLE SHOT. . j The most' wonderful rifle shot in the world is said to be a boy. His name is Frince Otto, and he is the young chief of the Nez Perce Indians - of America. Becently he gave an exhibition of his skill before a military audience of the city of LSan Francisco, and astonished everybody by bis extraordinary quickness, and. ^precision. A framework was built upon a stage, within which were a number of swinging glass balls- Upon the rear plankment was suspended the figure of a man, life-size. A five-cent piece was placed upon the top of the head of this figure, Otto's back being to the object, the word." about'' was given, and the coin was pierced through the centre, . He then put down his rifle 6ft. from where he stood, turned a somersault, caught his rifle again, fired and cut the string of the suspended figure at which he had previously fired. A pistol barrel was then placed in a small steel frame; behind this was fixed a rasor with its edge facing the aud...

TALMAGE ON NEWSPAPERS. [Newspaper Article] — Wallaroo Times — 5 July 1882

TALMA.GE ON NEWSPAPERS. ; The -Eev. T. De Witt Talmage, the gjreat American preacher, recently addressed lii's congregation on the newspaper 'pfess-and its value in humanizing and civilising the people His text was Ezra, 16th chapter and 12th verse—" And the wheels were fail of eyes"—And Acts 17 and 21—" For the Atheneans and strangers that were there epent their time in nothing else bat to tell or hear lorne new things." In alluding to the antiquity of the newspaper he said the first to answer tlie cry " What is the news ?" were the Chinese, as over a thousand years ago in Pekin a journal was printed on silk. The first newspapers printed in Boston was in 1691, and in Philadelphia in 1781; the newspaper did not spring up suddenly, but came gradually. The circular begot the pamphlet, the pamphlet the quarterly, the quarterly the monthly, the monthly the weekly, and the weekly the daily. But just as the newspaper began to demonstrate -its power it was shackled. " Useless! Useless! ! U...
