Money in Pigs. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 26 February 1904

Moneys in Pigs. It is some-\vhat remarkable that pig-breecjing lu'is not be come one cf the great natural industries of Yictoiia, as well as of many other pa.rts of Aus tralia. In uo| other part of the world are the conditions more favourable for the development of the pig ! business. The climate is mild, the animals can run out of doon; practically the whole year round, and may, therefore, be kept under the most favourable hygienic con- j ditions, and their food can be produced as abundantly and cheaply as in any other country. I It is true we have had an out- j break of swine fever, but so far as Victoria is concerned there is reason to tope that it has been stamped out, or, at all events, controlled to such an extent that its spread has been checked. In Europe and America s^ine fever is so firmly established that its stamping out seems an impossi bility', and heavy annual losses are sustained. Furthermore, expensive sites have to be erected, and the pigs protected from the weathe...

Cultivation of Lucerne. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 26 February 1904

(MtiYation of Lucerne. When the cultivation of lucerne is begun the landowner should remember that the plant does not come to full maturity until the third year after sow ing, and meairwhile it should j be eiven fair treatment. Manv promising fields are ruined be cause the owners, seeing a nice growth, and thinking that it i ?will go to wiste if not eaten , off, put stock jon it, and eat it j down to the ground. Lucerne will stand for jmany years if it is given fair treatment in its earlier stages,! but if the owner sacrifices present gain to future profit, he has bnl}- himself to 1 blame if results do not come up j to expectations. The niostj profitable lucerne fields are J those to -which1 stock are never ! allowed access, except during j seven or eight weeks ot mid winter, when! the plants are practically dormant, and graz ing does not injure them. During the first year the best treatment to pjroperly establish lucerne is to cut it frequently with the mowing machine, set high, so...

Moreton Central Sugar Mill. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 26 February 1904

Moreton Central Sugar Mill. ! On Friday last a deputationjfroin the Proserp:ne Central Sugar) Mill waited upon the Minister for Agri culture. Mr. Denham, in repaying to the deputation, is reported, amongst other things, as having made use of the following in] con nection with the Moreton Central Sugar Mili : — | There was one mill in which this pro cess of foreclosure was going forward at the present time, this being absolutely necessary in The interests of the public funds invested in it, and in the interests of the shareholders themselves. The process of foreclosure on the Moreton 3Iill was now in the hands of the Crown Solicitor. : Mr. Keuna : [- that on the lands ? Mr. Denhasn : On the lands and mill. Mr. Higginson has purchased! !the goodwill and as a going con cerii the business of Mr, J. Simpson, cordial manufacturer, of Warren street, Brisbane. This line of business will not be new to Mr. Higgirjson, as he put in a few years at the busi ness with a well-known firn? in Belfast, previous to his coming to Queensland, since which, however, he has followed other avocations, such as family grocer, and later on as a sugarcane grower on a fairly larsre scale, and it\vas after the: sell- ing of his property down Perries' Creek, at a very satisfactory figure, that he decided on purchasing the business as mentioned above.
