The United Insurance Co.. Ltd. George and Hunter-st KNOWING OURSELVES. ' Know thyself,' truly that is the proverb of pro verbs — Apollo's proverb and the sun's but do you think you can know yourself by looking into yourself ? Never. You can know what you are only by looking out of yourself. Measure you cwn powers with those of others ; compare your own interests with those of others ; try to nnderstand what you appear to them as well as what they appear to you ; and judge of yourself in all things, relatively and subordinate^; not positively ? starting always with a wholesome conviction of the , probability that there is nothing particular about you., '

The Dignity of Life. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

The Dignity of Life. How trivial seem the circumstances that sometimes unexpectedly come to us, and give, under the providence of God, direction and impulse to our lives ! Truly we ' live and move and have our being ' in God. The slightest change in our human relations, the tailing of an autumnal leaf, the shadows lengthening around us at eventide, the pale sad face of the sufferer whom we meet on the way — these, with ten thousand other incidents in life, are profoundly significant. God watches every one of them. Intent upon our highest good he approaches us and influences us by the smallest events ; nothing is overlooked by Him. His ordering of our minutest affairs is always in love. And these slight variations in our human lives, so insignificant — less visible in their effects than the unobserved rip* pie that breaks upon the shore — are suddenly invested with w. ndrous meaning when we rightly view them, these varaitions are in ide, in the divme thought, the conneci ing links th...

Then came the servants of the King and said — ' Two .iged men are standing at the gates.' ' Let them ascend,' the monarch's voice replied. The aged m n appeared before the King, And, as he looked on them, the monach thought They'd surely place a crown upon his brow, Or lay their homage letters at his feet ; Not even greeting did the strangers give Unto the mighty ruler of the world. SELF-EDUCATION. God has placed us here to grow just as He placed' the trees and flowers. The trees and flowers grow unconsciously, and by no effort of their own. The Girl Whom Nobody Likes. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

The Girl Whom Nobody Likes. Have you ever met the sarcastic young woman I No ! Well I have, and I'm sorry for it. She is a pest The giddy girl, the gushing girl and the lackadaisical* miss are not ornaments whose loss would cause the word grief, but they can be tolerated. The sarcastic maiden should be suppressed by law. Suffered ! Yes I have and will not again. The school is growing. No» body likes the sarcastic girl ; everybody fears, and many hate her. Her stock in trade may originally have been satire, but has long ago denerated into im pudence, and with the degeneration has slioDed her ability to see the difference between what was and what is, between satire and impudence. She has been fostersd in the family circle, and generally stays there. She began with mild criticisms of her friends, and ended by lampooning- them. Now she was none, and caricatures her acquaintances. Her parents applauded her early efforts, and she r taliates by staying on their hands. The family think her...

CATHOLICS AND JEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

CATHOLICS AND JEWS ? A. - ? r. Re the recent publication of an article on the 'Jews of Sydney,' we are pleased to note what the Fi'ernM'Ss Journal- had to say on the subject in its issue of April 2nd:— '{ The Anti-Semitic outbreak occasioned by the Dreyfus ircident and the Zola trial is a revival o' that '?M.Z..I4. _£ .-.nvvnA* .-?*?«? writ « i-» K f Vl ti C?nf£11 H AT f ihf U fl T*l fM\Mll7JI« ?' tibn might have be- n expected to Hestmy. Superstitions and Coincidences. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

Superstitions and Coincidences. It is easy for the superstitious to place a small value upon what are merely coincidences. A small amount of common sense will precipitate any and every super stition. But the difficulty in killing off a superstition is that many persons fondle it and rather enjoy the possession of it, and the being possessed by it. The following coincidences, furnished by 1; The London Standard,' will probably be regarded with awe by some persons not yet released from the thraldom of super stition : It has been pointed out ere this that the letter M dogged the Napoleon family throughout their career, and one has only to look back at events that have hap pened in that family to see how true the assertion is, The great Napoleon's first battle was Monteno:te, his last Mont St. Jean ; Marengo was his first victory, Moscow was the beginning of the end. Twenty-six of his generals had names beginning with M, and his marshals included Massena, Mortier, Marmont, Mac donald Mu...

Farewell Social to Miss Goodman. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 April 1898

Farewell Social to Miss Goodman. It having been intimated that Miss Goodman was about to take her departure from Delegate, a number of her lady friends amongst whom she had labored, recognising the valuable assistance she had rendered in all matters of a public character, decided not to allow her to go away without tendering her some slight acknowledgment that the work she had done, and the assistance she had rendered, had met with tV.A?r annmhation. A meeting of ladies was called to discuss the matter, and as the outcome of the meeting on Thursday March 31, she was entertained at a fare well social in Rafter's Assembly, and was the recipient of a handsome diamond and ruby bangle. Miss Jane Baitley and Miss Twyford were elected joint secretaries to the movement, and the brilliant success of the social is sufficient proof of the manner in which they filled the position. The Hall had been nicely decorated for the occasion, the stage being prettily draped and fitted up as a drawing-roo...

He refuted the oft-repeated assertion by Jewish young men that the Jewish young women ' wanted too much,' and praised the figures of the Jewess, her house-keeping nualities. and championed the good taste of the young women as not being extravagant but at all times elegant and refined. He deprecated the want of con sideration ' by the otherwise worthy wealthy members of the community' .in not extending invites to the many rising Jewish young men of Sydney to Friday evening and Sabbath dinner parties. He alluded in this r...
