The Pops Another successful entertain ment was given by the committee of Pops. A packed house greeted the performers with rounds of well deserved applause. In the absence of Cr. O'Dea, proceedings were opened by a speech from Cr. Wilt shire, who referred to the recruits as being the pick of our men. He was also pleased to see such a crowd present, as the funds were to go to such a good cause. Mr. J. W. Steele occupied the chair, and announced a program compris- ing pianoforte solos by Messrs G. Valentine and N. LeConteur, two songs each by Misses D. Irvine and E. Grace, a stump speech by Mr, P. Kinane, who gave an im- personation of a Dago for an en- core. Mrs Gillespie sang two songs and Mr. Steele made some compli mentary remarks about the recruits and the boys already at the front. Mr. E. Williams replied on behalf of the recruits. A pianoforte duet was rendered by the Misses Grace, and a song by Mr. Holbrook. A set of fish knives and forks raffled in aid of the Wounded Soldiers'...

Splendid Reception Recorded. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 28 July 1915

Splendid Reception Accorded   On Tuesday afternoon upwards of 100 recruits from Birchip, War- acknabeal; Ouyen, Watchem, Sheep Hills, Mildura, Swan Hill, and other parts of the Mallee and Wimmera, were met on arrival at Spencer-street railway station by the Hon. Wm. Huchinson, Hon F. W. Hagelthorn, Hon.- John Gray, Mr. Sydney Sampson M-H-R- and the Hon. R. B. Rees. Headed by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade Band, the men marched to the Melbourne Town Hall. En- route, the procession was enthu- siasticaly cheered by throngs of city people- After being sworn in the men were entertained at din- ner at the Victoria Coffee Palace by the above Parliamentary repre- sentatives, who, in congratulatory speeches, complemented the re- cruits--a fine body of men-on   their patriotism, and in wishing them every success in the arduous task ahead, trusted they would safely return when victory had been won by the allied forces. Walpeup Shire Council At the ordinary meeting of the above body on Friday last: there were present Crs. Wiltshire, Far- re,. Hecht, Pickering and Glen. The president (Cr. O'Dea) wired an apology, having missed the train. Cr Wiltshire was voted to the chair CORRESPONDENCE Horse feed is not only dear, but very scarce, and as a consequence, contractor W. A. Leach asked for an extension of time to complete his contract at Redfern's Hill. Until the end of August was gran- ted. Out at Cowangie a new road is to be put in, and Mr. D. Clarke asked that it be put on the north side of the railway, as this would not only be shorter, but more dir- ect to MurrayviIle. The engineer will report. A deviation through F. Shard's block at Woornack wants fencing, and as wire has gone up, appli- cant asked 9/ a chain to do it, but the council will not pay more than the regulation 6/.
