THE "SYDNEY MAIL" AND THE "MINING RECORD." [Newspaper Article] — The Mining Record and Grenfell General Advertiser — 20 June 1868

THE 'SYDNEY MAIL' AND THE I « MINING RECORD.' I Thb ' Sydney Mail' of last week, in publish ing a paragraph, which appeared In tho MRecord'of JuneCth, relating to theCbincse at Burrangong, comments on it in tho following terms i— ' Tho ' Mining Boeord,' published at Gronfell, may bo regarded as being spcoially the organ of tho mining population' of tho Emu Creek ; and a very largo proportion of that population consists of old residents on Lambing Fiat who wero exceedingly nnta. gonistio to tho Ohlnese. Tho tone of the fol lowing paragraph would, therefore, soora to show that a vory complete and radical change i bad como over thoso who woro onco tho most I extreme amongst tho anti-Mongolians.' Now, we take exception to this, and say that the inference attempted to bo drawn from our remarks is not a just ono, and not war ranted by tho longuago used. EPITOME OF NEWS; Tub Cowni Bbidob.— Two years havo nearly dragged their slow length along since tho projocted bridgo across the Lachlan River, at Cowra, was first cntrustod into tho hinds of a contractor for creation, who signally failed in making even a common senso attempt to carry out the works, and who soon proved his utter incapacity for such an undertaking. The carelessness of tho Government was shown in giving a Isrge contract to a man destituto of capital, and ovon of tho necossary guarantors. Having carried on the works for a few weeks it soon boenrao apparent, to even tho most cursory obsorvor, that they wero begun . after a style which would prove fatal to tho com pletion of tbo bridge. Tho men engaged never received payment, with tbo exception of a few storo goods whore an order on tho contractor was accrcdited i oven theso orders began to bo lookod upon doubtfully, and the wary store keepers closed tho accounts.
