Ci)e 33 ep SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1838. " Quod petis liic est." Although we are avowedly of Free "Trade , principles, and honestly con eider that, commerce is best unfettered by Custom-house or excise duties, yet, unless some general understanding is coma to as to the terms and conditions • on which the produce of each colony is to be admitted into their several markets, Protection will bepome a necessity. The produce of the other colonies is admitted into'the Sydney market free of all charge. We are relucantly compell d to acknowledge that a grovelling, selfish spirit, is gradu ally spreading amongst us, and though slowly, yet surely, it is obliterating those liner feelings which should characterise the citizen,*thc subject, and the man. People of Bega, Meritnbula, Panbula, and Eden we blush for you. Here you are living in a couirry surrounded with every natural blessing and comfort; with a fruitful an...

THE GERAT CURE ALL! KNOWN THROUIIOUT THE WORLD. HOLLOWAY'S OINTMENT. Bad Legs, Bad Breasts, Sores and Ulcers. ALL description of sores are remedied by the ptoper and diligent use of this inestimable preparation. To attenjptto cure bad legs by plas tering the edges of the wound together is a folly ; for should the skin unite, a boggy diseased condi tion remains nuderneatli to break out with tenfold fury in a few days. The only rational and success ful treatment, as indicated by nature, is to reduce the inflammation in and about the wound atod to soothe the neighbouring partd by rubbing in plenty of the Ointment as salt is forced into meat. This will Cause the malignant humours to be drained off from the hard, swollen, and discoloured parts round the wound, sore or ulcer, and when these humours lire removed, the wounds themselves will soon heal; warm bread and" watei" poultices applied over the affected parts, after the Ointment lias been rubbed in, will soothe and soften the Bame, an...

Serious Accident.—We are sorry to hear that a nephew of Mr. A. 1C. Page met with an accident, which is, we fear, of a very serious nature, involving the amputation of the two middle fingers of the youth's left hand. From such inform ation as has reached us, we learn that Master Page was somewhat incautiously trifling with a pistol charged only with powder. It exploded, and the consequence is that the two fingers are so shattered, that Dr. Shiels deems amputation neces sary., Roads.—The following letter is a reply to a petition sent to the Minister for Lands respecting the road to the Murrah via Nelson's :—Department of Lands, Sydney, 20th January, 1868. Preserved Meat.—Many of oufr readers are probably aware that Mr. James Manning has given his attention for some time past to the experiment of preserving fresh beef for exportation (under Mr E. "W". Lang's patent, and with Mr Lang) at a price that will re munerate those interested in the specu lation, and it seems, in all probability, to become a great success. From a letter of Mr Manning's, which has been shewn to us, we learn that some tins which were forwarded to Sydney for inspection and approval at the Horticultural Exhibition recently held there received a silver medal, and on being submitted to his - Boyal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, he displayed great interest therein, and requested that some tins should be sent on board the Galatea. This is cheering news in these dull times, and will be the means no doubt of giving a standard value to our cattle, which for years past has fluctuated in price so considerably that breeders have scarcely known what they could expect to real...

The long looked-for and anxiously . expected arrival of his Royal Highness Prince Alfred in New South Wales has become an accomplished fact, and in a.great measure the excitement consequent thereupon has passed away. The citizens of Sydney have had upwards of a fortnight's holiday keepiug, and business for the time, both public and private, has been to a certain extent laid on one side. Ex hibitions, reviews, balls, illuminations, races, cricketing, &c, &c, have so rapidly succeeded each other, that the Prince and the people must have be come thoroughly satiated with plea suFjf and amusement.
