Queensland Atrocities. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 28 July 1880

Queensland Atrocities. BY AN EX-TROOPER. SIR, - It will be a novelty to you no doubt to get a letter from one of my color, but though only a nigger, I can read and write, and I many add that in my young days I was reckoned the blackest and most accomplished villain over turned out by the United Twadd- lers Missionary Station. I have seen a deal of life in my time, and now having sown all my wild oats, am a respectable old pensioner – what you would call, I suppose, a "white   nigger." First let me give you a short sketch of my career, and then I will leave you to judge if I ought not to be able to   throw as much light on this great question of the day as some of your Brisbane "big bugs "   who have set themselves up to teach how you ought to manage the wild blacks. Six years of my boyhood were spent at the U.T. Missionary Station, At sixteen, owing   to a little trouble - not wholly unconnected with an attempt at rape on a married woman near t...

Mitchell and Warrego Hospital, Tambo. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 28 July 1880

Mitchell and Warrego Hospital, Tambo. THE Committee of the Mitchell and Warrego Hospital held their usual monthly meeting on Wednesday, the 14th of July. There were present Messrs. T. A. Hamilton (Chairman), Hyde, Mulhern, Phillips, Milne, Smart, Moody, M'Guire, Dr. Alessandri, and the Secretary. The half-yearly balance sheet was received showing £342 13s. 7d. to the credit of the current account of the Institution, with £400 standing as a fixed deposit. It will be seen from this that our financial condition is ex- ceedingly satisfactory. The chief items in the balance sheet which arrest attention are the private subscriptions, and the Govern- ment assistance under the various names of pauper grant, aid on account of subscription, unclaimed poundage, and building account. These four last combined reach the respectable sum of £1173 10s. The private subscriptions for the half year amounted to £160 1s. 5d. The expenditure has proceeded in the usual way. It is certainly very heavy, bein...
