SERIOUS SHOOTING ACCIDENT AT BRIGHTON. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 1 March 1879

SERIOUS SHOOTING ACCIDENT AT BRIGH'TON. -4---- A serious bccident with fire-arms occurred at the Trinity Church Sunday. school (St. Kilda) pic-nic, which was being held at Brighton beach on Satur. day afternoon. Mr Bryant, one of the teachers, was starting the boys' races with a breech.loading pistol, loaded with ball cartridges. Having occasion to lay it down, he Narned the boys not to touch it, as it was loaded with ball. In direct disobedience of this caution, a boy named Proud took it up and walked away with it, followed by auother named Allen, to whom Proud said, " Look out, Bob, or I shall shoot you." Immediately the chargeexploded, the ball passing through Proud's hand and lodging in Allan's side. Medical assistance was telegraphed for, and Mr Tovell promptly attended. Proud was then taken to the Alfred Hospital, and Allen was removed to Grimbly's hotel, when such dangerous symptoms sr,t in that Dr. Dompsey was sent for to hold a consultation. MAIL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 1 March 1879

NIAIL NEWS. The reports of the distress in England generally appear to have been some what exaggerated, as in no single place has the destitution been such as to require extraneous assistance. The Lord Mayor of London tefused, in fact, to set on foot a Mausionhouse relief fund, on the ground that there was not, so far as could he learnt, bufficient reason for taking such sleps. At the same time, intense depression in trade has caused great mitery in many districts, which has been aggravated by the bitterly cold weather and per petually-recurring strikes. A strike on the mos' extensive scale, which would affoct 60,000 workmen, threatened to break out in South York- I shire and Lancashire, but both masters and men hLve now agreed to appeal to arbitration. Strikes have been prevalent in all t parts of the country during the last 1 week, the most noticeable being that of the guards sad shunters on the Midland Railway, who, having received notice of a reduction of le in their wages, t st...

I ahdlpt & ea taltndard rULltUWo avast ATUBI)AT SExoELMItl('." SATURDAY, Isr MARCH. WE feel it our duty to direct attention to the publie meeting of subscribets, which is to be held in the Shire Hall this afternoon, for the purpose of con sidering the present most unsatisfactory state of affairs in connection with the Alexandra Cottage Hospital, and to urge upon all those who take any interest therein to attend, in order that steps may be taken to prevent what all must admit would be a lasting diPgrace to the entire, community, i.e. the cloeing of its doors against the sick and unfor tunate. As we write we have the balance.sheet before us, and upon a refersnoe thereto find that throughout the entire shire, with a population of over 4000 inhabitants, the insignificant sum' ol £34 10s only has been cub- secribhod to the institution during the past year by private persons. This is really too bhad, and as we have from sime to time heard several complaints as to mismanagement, and...

The Ballarat Courier of the 20th inst records the following acts of larrikinism com- mitted by some of the excursionists from Geelong on Wednesday night as the picnickers were being conveyed from the Botanical gardens to the Pivot. The railway depart- ment, with a view to the convenience of the excursionists, had the trains containing them taken to the gardens siding where the passen- gers were put down, and whence they com- menced their return journey. Some of the youth in the trains, endowed by, nature with very rough instincts, and processed of a training that did not enpower them to restrain their vicious desires, armed themselves with stones before going into the carriages, and on passing the Maccarthur-street crossing they assailed the gatekeeper with a volley of missiles, most of which missed him, but one stone struck him on the eye and inflicted a nasty bruise. The gatekeeper's little daughter was within the house looking out of a window at the passing train, and some of the...
