Student Affairs The Student Affairs Office is a service for the students, however, many members of the college community feel that it has some negative connotations which unfortunately may be true. Bad news seems to travel faster than good news, and little of the positive efforts are apparent to most students. After talking with Mr. Gary Mead, Assistant to the Dean of Student Affairs, I came to the conclusion that a lot of the helpful work done by Student Affairs goes unnoticed, and the necessary functions, such as discipline, are more apparent. Student Affairs is responsible for student services such as financial aid, disciplinary actions, health services, and other student-oriented programs. It attempts to coordinate the student body and the University in activities and services. The manner in which Student Affairs is utilized is determined to a great extent by the students themselves. The opportunities are available for those who wish to make use of them. Concerning discipl...

Team Loses Doubleheader by Tough Duquesne Pitching Duo By Dave Loyenski Sports Editor Duquesne College of Pittsburgh put together two fine pitching performances by Steve Scheeren and Fred Schuster to take both ends of a doubleheader from Behrend. Scheeren tossed a six-hitter in the opener for a 6-1 victory and Schuster twirled a two hitter for a 5-0 triumph in the nightcap. The two losses put the Cubs, who are still winlessat 0-6 for the season. Earlier in the week the Cubs lost two games to Slippery Rock by the scores 7-1 and 11-1for their third and fourth losses of their campaign. Cubs' only tally of the day came in the seventh inning of the first game. After Scheeren had stifled them for six innings on only five hitshe let up a walk to Pete Houghton who advanced all the way to third when Dave Zimmerman singled. Trying to get-a large lead off third, Houghton was almost picked off when the Dukes' catcher, Joe Lutz tried to pick him off. Instead the throw went" wild allowing...

The Outdoor Information Center By Vic Kopnitsky Ji The trout season is now underway. There are plenty of trout in the area streams; howeverdue to both the low water level and the amount of heavy footed fishermen in and along the streams the trout are well hidden. I found most of the trout well spread out and in any type of hiding place that they could find. The rainbows are easy to catch if the fisherman works salmon eggs into brushpileslogjams, and heavy concentrations of bushes or roots in the stream. This is an easy task if the fisherman uses a flyrod. I have found that spinning line generally rides too high in the water thereby prohibiting a natural drift into a brushy spot when the line floats over an obstruction instead of under it. The flyrod allows a longer reach into the brush and the heavy line usually sinks under the obstructions allowing the bait to drift farther into the brush. If the trout are in slow water or open pools such as many of the lake-run streams, ...

Rich's Incredible "Soul" Captivates Behrend Audience by Jeti Wearer Guest Critic One of the truly great events in Behrend College's cultural history occurred last Monday night at 8 p.m. when Buddy Rich and his Big Band performed an awe-inspiring concert in Erie Hall. Buddy and his sixteen man band drove the crowd wild with his supercharged interpretations of such great classics of the Rich library asChannel One Suite, West Side Story, and Love For Sale. They also performed many tremendous contemporary selections as Dancing Men, (from Buddy's "Rich in London" album) What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life, and Norwegian Wood. But the real generator of excitement in the band was Buddy himself. The incredible feeling, energy, and drive he puts into his drumming and the band is beyond belief. It is this drive and energy, combined with phenominal technique, speed and exacting control of time and tempo that makes Rich so great. To simply look at his speed and technique alone is i...

New Theatre Professor Seko Brings Broadway to Behrend by Jeff Matson Staff Writer Moving from the excitement of New York and Broadway to the comparative calm of Erie, Pennsylvania seems like a strange kind of advancement, but not to Behrend's new theatre head, Arno Selco. For eight years Mr.' Selco worked as a professional actor in over twentytwo theatres including a run on Broadway in the musical Flower Drum Song. A sampling of the many stock productions he has appeared in include West Side Story, Bye, Bye, Birdie, South Pacificand The King and I. Also a veteran of movies and television Mr. Selco has appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Doctors, and had a feature role in the movie Act I starring George Hamilton. Most recently Mr. Selco choreographed and appeared in the world premiere of Dave (Sticks and Bones) Rabe's new piay, In' the Boom Boom Room, at Villanova. The show is now slated for a Broadway run. It all sounds successful enough, so why leave it to be a college in...

New Patrol Installed by Bud Ore Staff Writer The Eehrend College Security Police has changed its name to come under the heading of the Department of University Safety and Police and Safety Services. This is the first of many steps to change its image. Led by Chief Gene Johnson, the patrol is trying to change from a "rent-a-cop" image to that of an efficient police force that will benefit the students and their needs. "What we hope to accomplish is to become a part of the campus community," Chief Johnson said in a recent interview and added that suggestions from students will be welcome at all times. Another step in the image change are new uniforms con¬ sisting of a blue blazer and gray slacks in an attempt to get away from the blue military-type uniform. Other plans include trying to get into the Erie Police Academy for further training. This would consist of a 400 hour course in the various aspects of police work and would add to the patrol's general.efficiency. Chief John...

Telephone Controversy Dear Editor, As a dorm student I would like to state my objections to having one phone for the entire floor. First of all I wonder if there isn't some way we could make oncampus calls without having to pay for them. It is not easy to chase someone around campus. This will become even truer as winter comes. Secondly, people are losing money in the phone now. Isn't it enough that we lose money in cigarette machines, pop machines and candy machines? For those- "lucky" students whose rooms are near the phone and who have the jexciting responsibility of answering it, a few additional problems exist. The ringing, especially during quiet hours . and ,in the,. early morning hours can be very annoying. Many times you know the phone is probably for-oae of three or four people, but it is these same three or four people who never answer the phone even if they live directly across the hall. I realize that most colleges have only one phone per floor and that this is mo...
