Farm Economics [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 22 February 1896

Farm Economics Pie Bakery Economics WE have before called attention to paucity of brain tissue as exhibited by the editorial writers of the Chicago Times-Herald when dealing with economic questions . Instead of making the rash statements to which it is addicted , It would be wise to follow the example of the Tribune and others of the ardent worshipers of the golden calf who call the advocates of bimetallism all the hard names they can think of . When , facts are scarce and logic weak and the strong reasons all on the other side , as is the case with the goldites , there is no argument so effective as to lustily ¦ hout crank , lunatic , long-eared prairie shriekers , etc . It is very convincing to weak intellects . In commenting on the recent large oversubscription to the bond sale the TimesHerald says editorially : This Is conclusive proof of the utter impotency of the free coinage fad in the United States , all assertions to the contrary notwithstanding . We must confess that we ar...

Gold bug . Lunacy [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 22 February 1896

Gold bug . Lunacy rrHB following extract from a criticism J of a Chicago Tribune editorial , by J . o Robinson , in the Inter Ocean of Jan- ; narv 11 , will meet the hearty approval of every one who believes in sound money for the whole people : It ( The Tribune ) has advocated the cause of those who have and can afford to pay money , and has been loyal to its own interests therein—painfully against the interests of the people . Within two or three months I hard the conversation of a prominent English statesman and writer on political economical subjects , in talk with an old reader and disciple of the Tribune , ask the question How is It , Mr . J ., that your people can be so blind to their self-interest as to permit your Congress to legislate as It does on the money , bond , and currency Interests of the country ? Out of a large number of ( from eighteen to twenty-four ) acts of your Congress on those matters , not six have been ln the Interest of your own people . Every well-read...

Across the Delaware Tbe winter night ls cold and drear . Along the river s sullen flow ; The cruel frost ls camping here—The air has flying blades of snow . Look I pushing from the Icy strand , With ensigns freezing ln the air , There sails a small but mighty band Across the dangrons Delaware . O wherefore , soldiers , would you fight The bayonets of a wintry storm ? In truth , It were a better night , For blazing flre , and blankets warm ! We seek to trap a foreign foe , Who fill themselves with stolen fare ; We carry Freedom as we go Across the storm-swept Delaware ! The night ls fnll of lnsty cheer . Within the Hessian s merry camp ; And faint and fainter on the ear , Doth fall the heedless sentry s trump O hirelings , this hew nation s rage Is something tis not well to dare ; Ton are not fitted to engage These men from o er the Delaware ! A rush—a shout—a clarion call , Salute the early morning s gray ; Now , roused invaders , yield or fall ; The refuge-land has won the day ! So...

Practical Housekeeping [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 22 February 1896

Practical Housekeeping It Makes the Burdens Lighter Let me carry yonr pall , my dear , Brimming over with water ! No ! Ill take hold and you take hold , Answered the farmer s daughter . And she would have her own sweet way , As her merry eyes grew brighter ; So she took hold and he took hold , And lt made the burden lighter . And now they re at the eve of life , While the western skies grow blighter ; For Freedom s torch Illumes the world , And lt made the burdens lighter . —Selected . Sprinkles of Salt It has been noticed that workmen attending pans in salt works do not have cholera , small pox , scarlet fever or influenza . An agreeable way of treating the eyes with salt and water is to wink them in a cup that is brimful . The eyes will be suffused by simply winking the lashes in th water . Good laundry women always rub their irons in salt to make them smooth before putting them upon fine starched goods ; and it does clean them beautifully—better than wax . Dairy salt sprinkled ov...

WEEKLY MARKET REVIEW [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 22 February 1896

WEEKLY MARKET REVIEW C GRAIN MARKETS . Chicago , Feb . IS , 1898 . The wheat market yesterday was something of an enigma . It opened stronger and % @ % c higher than it closed Saturday , . but fell off l _ a from the top -gates and closed at a decline of a short % c . The business done was far from a large one , and wholly on local account In a shipping way a very good business was done , a Uttle over 100 , 00 bushels being sold , the premiums on winter No . 2 red being _@_ _ o over May , as a rule , with 2 % @ 2 % c paid where location was favorable . There were orders for three or four lots of spring and for one cargo , but buyers wanted the grain at 2 c under May , while holders asked l % c under . At the close negotiations were Btlll pending . Whether the trade goes through or not , lt shows a good shipping demand . A strong effort was made to get May under 66 c , but lt was a failure , though the price got to 6 S _ e perhaps half a dosen times during the session . It was hinted...
