PEDESTBI ANISIC [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 7 January 1854

PEDESTBI ANISIC From Bell s Life , December 4 . The Corinthian Baoes for £ 60 a side . The flrst of two events—a flat race and a hurdle one [ viz . the flat one]—came off on Tuesday last . ltwas one which had created more excitement , and f iven rise to more discnsiion a * to the relatire merits of pedestrians , than any that ha * taken place for a long time . The ground selected was near Salt Hill , a short distance beyond Slough , on a portion of the road so well known as Maxfield s Mile . The competing parties were two officers in her Majesty s army , Captain Astley , of the Scots Fusilier Guards , and Lieutenant Sayer , of the 23 d Welch Fusiliers . From the well kno * n celebrity in the sporting world of both gentlemen , a first-rate and highly interesting match was anticipated , nor were the expectants disappointed . And it gives us pleasure in recording this straightforward and manly exhibition [ so unlike many that have recently taken place , and were likely to bring pedestr...

ITEMS OF IHTEBE 8 T . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 7 January 1854

ITEMS OF IHTEBE 8 T . From late foreign journals received at this office . The Shipowners and Seamen of the North . Up to Wednesday the shipowners have succeeded in getting 18- ships to sea , manned < with men not belonging to the Seamen s Union . The cost of each man thus shipped must be about £ 5 pei head , for the owners have opened an office , sent agents to the different outports , placarded the towns , and well advertised for men , and the number of blacklegs procured by this expenditure is about 70 ; whereas the Seamen s Union in Sunderland numbers 3 , 254 members . If the owners can only beat up 70 men , or thereabouts , in two months , their chance of defeating the Seamen s Union is very small . On the Tynethe owners are still less successful , and each man , we are told , must cost them £ 10 before he is shipped . The Tyne Union musters from 3 , 000 to 4 * 000 ; so , if it costs £ 10 per head to make a blackleg , 4 he shipping offices will swallow up the capital...

INTERESTING ITEMS . Amecdotes of Birds , Beasts , & e . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 7 January 1854

INTERESTING ITEMS . Amecdotes of Birds , Beasts , & e . BY A SKETCHED . A SWAN S FIRST LOVE . A pair of swans had been inseparable companians for three successive years , during which time they had reared three broods of cygnets . Last autumn the male was killed , and since that time the female has seperated herself from all society with her own species ; and , though at the time I am writing ( the end of March ) the breeding season for swans is far advanced , she remains in the same state of seclusion , resisting the addresses of a male swan who has been making advances towards forming an acquaintance wih her , either driving him away , or flying from nim whenever he comes near her . . How long she will continue in her present state of widowhood I know not , but at present it is quite evident that she has not forgotten her former partner . AFFECTION OF PIGEONS . A man , set to watch a field of peat which had beeu much preyed upon by pigeons , shot an old cock pigeon who...
