CHICKEN HOUSES NEED IMPROVING [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Weekly Review — 25 September 1929

CHICKEN HOUSES NEED IMPROVING PHI Lack of Light or Ventilation Discourages Hens . Many old poultry houses are lacking in light or ventilation or both . Where ample light is already provided through windows but ventilation is Inadequate , it is often best to remove the upper sash . of the windows . If there are not enough windows , additional openings -should be cut In the upper part of the front wall . Under Kansas conditions it Is desirable to make these openings equal to about one-tenth of the floor space . Hail screen over these openings will serve to keep the poultry In and rodents out , suggests Walter G . Ward , extension architect , Kansas State Agricultural college , in giving hints on improving the old poultry house . Frames covered with a light weight of muslin may be provided In the front openings to protect the flock during very cold or stormy weather . Remodeled Dairy Barns Render Better Service [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Weekly Review — 25 September 1929

Remodeled Dairy Barns Render Better Service Old barns made new by being properly remodeled or repaired will render good service to many dairymen who are now struggling along with poor equipment . Even a shed which is rebuilt so as to provide good floors , stanchions , ventilation , sunshine and warmth will be worth while .,. Dairy cows will pay better returns-for improved conditions than practically any other-type of live stock on the farm . In addition , the owner spends more time with the cows than with most other types of live stock , so that he will share in the added comfort and convenience .

Soy Beans and Corn [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Weekly Review — 25 September 1929

Soy Beans and Corn Soy beans alone do not ^ -make a satisfactory stage . It is best to combine them with corn in . the proportion of two or three to one ; that is , two or three loads of corn to one , of soy beans . It is also best to mix the two as they are blown into the silo , rather than to-put in a layer of beans and then a layer of corn . Mixing In this way you should be able to get a satisfactory silage . Soy beans intended for . silage should be cut before the beans in the pods harden . Silage for Calf Silage is not very good for calves under four months of age and then only the leafy parts should be fed iri small amounts . Very often young ; stock is neglected and not kept In a growing condition . A heifer must be well fed with a light feed of grain . A cow in order to be able to consume large quantities of feed must be fed while young all the good roughage she will take so as . to develop a large capacity for feed which will be needed whnti she comes in milk .

Silo for One Cow Plan , / Now in Vogue hr Japan > What would our American farmers think of equipping their farms so that each cow would have her , own silo ? * In Japan , they dont quite , do this , but many farmers . keeping one or two cows have a silo . The department of agriculture of Japan , reported in 1925 , • 4 , 381 silos of less than five tons each . Now a cow needs about four tons . of silage per year so these less-than-llve-ton silos could be classified as - Individual silosv , or one cow silos . Another thing of interest concern-, ing the silos of Japan is the fact that the vines of sweet potatoes come , next to corn In material used for filling . All kinds of green , succulent forage . and material grown on the farm are cut up and put Into the silo where it ¦ is preserved and fed out during the . winter season . Silos are making rapid progress in Japan according to the report , and are being widely used by the stock keeper s . , .
