Chicago as a Poultry Market By H . L . Brown & Son , Commission Merchants , 225 and 227 South Water St ., Chicago . / T ^\ HE magnitude of the poultry busiI ness , which is conducted on the - * - • Chicago , as well as other markets of the country , during the season , is a surprising revelation to those not familiar with the trade . Each year finds the business more far-reaching anil extensive than its predecessor and the poultry industry has already challenged tho other meat interests of the country and bids fair . to surpass ithem iu magnitude and expansion . A comparatively few years ago the raising of poultry -was confined to the frugal efforts of the farmer s wife and was usually tanned a side issue by the tiller of the soil , but late years the same individual has prudently , enlarged his poultry yards and Increased his supply of poultry , at the expense of other animals of the . farm , whicli he considered , heretofore , indispensable . . - • The transportation o...

Helps to Pbtiitb Culture [Newspaper Article] — National Rural and Family Magazine — 2 February 1899
Helps to Pbtiitb Culture By F . ; M . Benedict . THIS is a good time to prepare for the busy season sure ; to come next summer .- I have . observed so many f arn > ers during ; the past season in Wisconsin and other states outside of-the potatoe belt who were following the old method pursued by us all when potatoes were grown in patches in lieu of field culture , that I may be pardoned for giving some of the means of saving labor as practiced at Waupaca , Mich . We plant , deep . enough to permit the ground to be harrowed with a good drag . Any common harrow will do , though the teeth should not be too long . Drag several times fromplanting : time until the potatoes come up and there will be no need to make a bee > to dig out the weeds by hand in June . ¦ : I saw many instances last summer where more human labor was being expended on a patch : of half an acre of potatoes than is necessary to cultivate a crop on ten-acres here in the belt . This 1 great saving o...

Tirnelv Topics [Newspaper Article] — National Rural and Family Magazine — 2 February 1899
Tirnelv Topics Price and Trade Review OUR index table of twenty staple farm products shows an upward tendency ¦ of- prices last week ; especially wheat . There was nothing in the situation to warrant a rise , however , but it was merely speculative . Wall street took a shy at the wheat market and sent prices up . As we have stated all along , the prospect for higher iirices or at least a continuation of the present good prices for corn and its products , pork and beef , are favorable . The outlook does not indicate a rise or even a continuation of tho present scale of average prices in the whole agricultural list however . . Average prices and the quantity of money in circulation are so intimately associated that by feeling the pulse of one the condition of the other can . be pretty accurately forecast .. There is now nearly $ 400 , 000 , 000 more money in circulation than at the lowest price period in 1890 , to say nothing of a very : large increase in bank credits ,- which in our ...

More About Sugar [Newspaper Article] — National Rural and Family Magazine — 2 February 1899
More About Sugar OUR sugar articles in the past numbers have created great interest . Undoubtedly sugar growing is the most profitable branch of farming that can be followed in United States at the present time . As shown in a recent article on this topic , while we consume hi United States 4 , 500 , 000 , 000 lbs ., of sugar per . annum , our total product Only averages about 700 , 000 ,- 000 . The balance is imported . The duty alone on the sugar we import amounts to $ 50 , 000 , 000 per annum . The amount paid out in excess of the duty to foreign growers is about $ 125 , 000 , 000 , making $ 175 , 000 , r 000 our people are annually paying for foreign sugar , which amount should go into the pockets of our own farmers . - The National Rural is not happy . unless it has a hobby . It always rides a good one , however , as its old readers will attest . It sometimes strides several at-a time . We believe the United States should produce all the sugar it consumes and , have some to exp...

Mr . Ira Smedes » of Fulton County , Ohio , writes as follows : J . , _ At the time you started your Fair Oaks colony in California I wanted to become a member of it , but could not get ready in time I now want to get in on the ground floor on your Florida plan , and I hereby . •; oree to take 40 acres at the price named , $ 10 per acre , and my sister , Mrs . P . Van Vlierden , will also take 40 acres . We would like to locate together . I have also a friend in Texas whom I believe would locate with us . I therefore send ten cents and n sk that you send extra copies of the paper to him . Now I would like to ask you a few questions : I understand that Mr . Jas . W . Wilson , the father of the plan and manager of the paper , is- to be the general disbursing agent of the enterprise . . Am I right ? That will be determined later , after the plan is fully developed . Mr . Wilson thinks a commission should , be appointed and would not- object to being one . 2 . What will it cost to clear...
