THE PEBJ-BED GOLDSMITH . [ Concluded from Page 268 . 1 Col . McHenry stopped with her at a . justice s office , and briefly and clearly made his complaint , and in a few minntes Mr . Brochard was brought Into the presence of the magistrate . He appeared to be in great trepidation , and was pale as ashes ; for he had been suddenly taken without warning from behind his counter , leaving the shop in charge of his astonished assistants . Colonel McHenry and the young lady being sworn , deposed that they last saw the clasp on the showcase , where each went ont and left it ; the former further deposed that he had not gone twenty steps from the door before he returned and found it missing , and no one was in the vicinity but the defendant . "The Cattle Plague . " [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 15 August 1868

The Cattle Plague . We are able to give little additional Information of practical value as to the fatal cattle disease now raging in Central Illinois , ln the vicinity of the Union Stock Yards at Chicago , and In different parts of Indiana . In the aggregate many hundred cattle have died from this disease , those attacked rarely , if ever , recovering . The disease has made its appearance in a nnmber of Eastern cattle markets , among cattle shipped from the West . Wkt gtottik [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 15 August 1868

Wkt gtottik Written fcr The Western Sural . Tyrannical Men . I think most of my readers will admit tbat there is found occasionally such a creature as a tyrannical man—one who is snch in his family circle , at all events . I have known men who were patterns of gentleness and suavity in their business relations , who were anything bnt gentle in their domestic relations . They were not born to rule their peers ; so they rnled over those who were * weaker and more helpless than themselves , —such as wiv . es , and children , and hired men , with a rod of Iron . I will not deal in vague generalities , but relate some instances of petty tyranny of ac . tual occurrence . There was a man who had a little , meekfaced wife , seven girls , one boy , and a large form . He used to be obliged to hire help npon his farm , and of course he could not get men who would do work just as he did lt himself . In the planting of corn , or potatoes , if the rows were not jnst so straight , and the hills ju...

mMm ' fi € mtx [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 15 August 1868

mMm fi € mtx Catching and Bang Caught A VACATION-DAT STOBT . A few months ago one of our little folks contributors gave you a picture bf Dickey s Holiday , and now I must tell you about one of Jakey s Vacation-days . Jakey was not a very good boy , for he often disobeyed his parents , but as a redeeming feature was very sorry . for it afterward . Now Jakey had a very mischievous dog which he called Catch , and very well named was he too , for he was always catching or biting whatever came in his way . During vacation , Jakey and his parents went to the country to spend the hot weeks , and of course Catch must go along . Here Catch had full sway . There was not a pig , nor cow , nor goose , that could not , with tears In their eyes , ( If they could have shed tears , ) have shown some mark of Catch s teeth or paws , and Jakey , ! am sorry to say , seemed to enjoy this cruel sport as much as Catch . Not far from the country place where Jakey-and his parents were staying , there lived ...

THE APIARY [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 15 August 1868

THE APIARY management of Honey Bees . JASPER HAZEN , one of our most successnil apiarians , writes thus in relation to the management of new swarms : When a swarm is seen issuing from a hlve ,, do not get in a flurry , but keep cool Do not be so foolish as to blow horns , ring bells , and scare your bees to the wood ; but stand quitely and watch their movements , and nineteen times out of twenty they wiU cluster all right . As soon as they have settled , prepare to hive them , an operation which may be successfully done , and without the least trouble , as follows : Bring a dish of cold water , and with the liand or a whisk of grass sprinkle the cluster well . This will make them perfectly -quiet and easy to handie . Bring out a table , or if that is not convenient , spread a cloth or board on the ground , and if they are to be hived into a common-box Or straw hive , set it upon the table or place prepared for it , raise upon one side an inch or more , and put under a stone or chip ...

THE POULTRY YARD [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 15 August 1868

THE POULTRY YARD Poultry Raising as a Business . The N . Y . World gives a pleasant account of the way in which Walter Leland , proprietor of the Metropolitan Hotel , New York city , manages his large stock of poultry . We make the following extract : He devotes about twenty acres of rough land to his poultry . For . tillage this range would not be worth mnch , but for chickens and ducks it is just the place . He , lets the bushes grow and leaves a pond for ¦ the ducks . The turkeys have woods to jrange in and trees to roost on . In Summer the only rule is to give freedom , ample freedom to all the tribes , a suitable lot or pond for ducks , a natural range for turkeys , hill-sides , bushes , nooks , shelters , hidingplaces of all sorts for hens with broods . He discards coops altogether this year , -finding no advantage from them , has no bigh fences , no bars and bolts , no fetters or . jails for his domestic birds . The wings of the geeee are not clipped ; the toes of the hens ar...
