Who ' s Who in Berkshires [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

Who s Who in Berkshires E . A . WEBB , St . Paul , Minn . One of the leading agricultural papers in the Norhtwestern states is The Farmer , published at St . Paul , Minn . It has attained this prominence largely through the personal efforts of its founder and publisher , Mr . E . A . Webb , the subject of this sketch . In the building up of his publication , Mr . Webb has naturally been brought into touch with the development of the live stock industry of the Northwest , formerly a territory given over largely to grain growing , but now making rapid strides , toward the production of high class live stock . To bring his paper into close touch with actual farm conditions , Mr . Webb purchased a 400-acre farm , eight years ago , and in a practical manner has maintained this farm as a model farm and an experiment station for the benefit of the readers of the paper . Incidentally , he has also built up an extensive herd of Shorthorn cattle and Berkshire swine , these two herds ranking w...

Notes From the South . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

Notes From the South . Nashville , Tenn . Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 ., Dear Sirs : I have repeatedly advertised that a big outlay of cash is not necessary to go into the breeding of pure bred Berkshires . I have said so often that the person who begins in a small way usually finishes up in good shape and makes a success . This is better explained in the transactions of the celebrated Ewell Farm , Spring Hill , Tenn . In February , 1909 ,. George and Percy Brown , proprietors of the celebrated Ewell Farm , where more celebrated pacers were born and developed than upon any ten farms in America , bought from us a brood sow , two gilts and a boar . From the Overton Hall Farm they bought another sow , and one , 1 think , from Dr . W . C . Campbell , ot Franklin , Tenn . Their transactions were confined to the February sale at Nashville . This was the whole investment . The boar they purchased was a pig by the Grand Champion , Lee s Artful Premier 12 th 107644 , and he proved to...

From An Old Breeder [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

From An Old Breeder BY GEO . W . BERRY , TOPEKA , KAN The Berkshire Futurity . Careful consideration of the Berkshire Futurity Show plan which has been proposed by The Berkshire World leads to the conclusion that this plan is the best that has been offered , and if followed out , will be the means of creating splendid exhibitions in the States where the futurity shows are held , and this plan provides for the most benefit to the greatest number of breeders . The giving of silver cups by the American Berkshire Association at State fairs stimulated showing , and better shows were held in several States . While the silver cup awarded by record associations is a trophy ot which the fortunate winner should be proud , it is believed that with the more liberal distribution of prizes under the Futurity plan , greater shows , both in number and quality of the animals , and in which more breeders can participate in the benefits derived from showing , will be encouraged . Under the Futurity pl...

Spicer on Futurity and The Congress [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

Spicer on Futurity and The Congress The Berkshire World Futurity . The American Berkshire Con gress . This move sets a precedent in the showing of swine , and the promoters are to be commended for their enterprise in the undertaking , and they should have the co-operation and hearty support of all enterprising breeders . They must have this support of the breeders to make a success of it . While this Futurity Show for swine is a new and untried thing with swine breeders , the race-horse men , for many years , had a Futurity stake for their young horses to compete for , each year , and the competition in these classes has been of the fiercest . Many men have made special effort to win in those Futurity stakes , and it has attracted much attention throughout the entire country and has done much for the advancement in horse breeding . Then , again , the bird dog men have regular field trials for their dogs ; where they actually run and worked on birds in the field in competition with t...

Berkshire THE Hog in Missis sippi . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

Berkshire THE Hog in Missis sippi . Payette , Miss . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : I want to write-and tell you and the readers of The Berkshire World my experience with Berkshire hogs . I am living In what was an all cotton section , but , with the advent of the boll weevil , had to look to other sources for a revenue . Having a natural fondness for stock , I naturally turned to that business , but , having used all the means at my command trying to raise cotton , a couple of pigs were about all I could raise the money to pay for . After studying the breeds , I decided that the Berkshire was the hog for this section and decided to breed them and breed as good as were to be had . I first bought two sow pigs from H . B . Ford of Centerville ; one a line bred Lord Premier , and the other a granddaughter of the great Masterpiece . Both ot these have developed into magnificent sows and I would hate to have to put a price on either of them . My next purchase was a...

Berkshires Drive Out the Poland Chinas and Durocs . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

Berkshires Drive Out the Poland Chinas and Durocs . Kenton , Ohio . The Berkshire World , Springfield , III . Gentlemen : —You ask about the Berkshire outlook in this locality—never so good . Six years ago , when I began breeding pure bred Berkshires , I was the only breeder within the radius of twenty-five miles or more and as I wrote you shortly after , the Berkshire hog was the most unpopular ^ in this Poland-China and Red Hog rtflistrict , owing to the fact that only some little short Berkshires had been bred in this territory . This year I sold twenty-two boars and sixteen gilts to my neighbors , and have not been able to supply the demand . I have four orders for boars for spring service . Three of my neighbors are putting in pure bred Berkshires now and others are on the way . I have for a herd boar , Swastika Longfellow , a son of Longfellow Premier C . He is the best pig I have seen this year . I have fourteen brood sows of the best breeding I can find . Next year looks goo...

The Berkshire Outlook . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

The Berkshire Outlook . ( Continued from Page 5 . ) est seems general throughout . As tor the outlook at Clifton Farms , It could not be better . We happened to the good luck , as some call it , of getting nearly all the sows safe In pig for very early March litters . However , I call this kind of luck lots ot hard work and getting at things in the right time . These sows are the very best ones I could buy and I have never yet let the price keep one out of my herd . Why shouldnt the outlook be bright under these circumstances ? I do not expect for any better pigs to be farrowed on earth , m the Spring of 1911 , than from these sows . I expect for them to be eligible for The Berkshire World Futurity Shows , and also to be capable of giving a good account of themselves in these shows or any others . Then , I have enough confidence in the business ability of the Southern breeders to believe they would rather pay the same price , or less , for the same kind of a pig where the express wo...
