After years of discussion and mature consideration our city authorities some three years ago were instructed by the people to erect Gas Works. Estimates were accordingly made and the worka commenced upon the belief that their entire cost would not eaeeed $! 40,000. They are now finished, and by the statement of the clerk the actual coot has been •246,616 42, but in this is included $30,000 appropriated by the Council tor an additional _ M holder, and an additional pair of purifvers which were not included in the original estimate. Deduct this from the $246,616 42 and the cost is shown to have been $216,616 42, or $76,616 42 beyond the estimate. And now the Committee on Light recommend,and the Council have adopted the idea of purchasing an additional lot at Rocketts, and of erecting thereupon additional works, which, if esperiencd m 10 be taken as a guide, ...
