Representatives to the Assembly. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 24 August 1854

Representatives to the Assembly. As there are many questions of public poli ty that will come before the next Legislature, we think it is our duty to advocate the nomi nation, in our contention on Monday next, of •uch men as have not made themselves obi Actionable to many of the friends of the present Administra'ion. Should our delegates convene in that spirit of conciliation, which we consider of so much importance in the success of our ticket in this county, we have no doubt of the election terminating in the complete ■uccoss of the Democratic candidate's. W«believe our true policy is to send such mew to the Legislature aa ore thoroughly acquainted with the wants of their constituents —those who have stamina to advocate the measure most conducive to the present and future pro? pcrity of the State and county. Wo hold it as one of our inalienable rights to avow, undisguiselly and boldy, our political preferences, and while we concede to others, the same inestimable priveleges, we sh...

The Know-Nothings. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 24 August 1854

The Know-Nothings. This jarty, of which there has been so much •aid, and so little known, has a newspaper in Boston, called the Know Nothing and Amen can Crusader. Fruit—The Season. Our Fruit .Dealers are wide awake in prepaiing for the shipment of large quantities of Grapes to San Francisco and the Northern markets. T ere is no section of equal ex tent in the State where therp is so great a variety of fruits, in such perfection and in such great abundance, as in this county. In May and June we commence with Apricots. Pears, Cherries and Figs, of the most delicious flavor; next comes in August the luxurious Grape, which will soon be in great perfection, and continue until October aud November ; Olives, Tunas, Limes, Lemons and Oranges will then be in season, find continue through the winter qtonths. LOS ANGELES STAR. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 24 August 1854

LOS ANGELES STAR. Nebraska and Kansas.—These but just organized territories are glowingly described by a gentleman who has resided in both, as follows. He believes "them to be the very garden of the world, for situation and fertility of the soil, as well for loveliness of climate and scenery." ¶ "The situation of this territory, as all are aware, is in the very heart of the country, it being about 2,000 miles from its eastern boundary to tho Atlantic at Boston; and also, the same distance to the Pacific Ocean. It is connected with the finest commercial emporiums of the west and south by the Missouri, Mississippi and Ohio rivers, and thence to every State and important city in tne Union by steamboat and railroad communication. The great Pacific railroad will undoubtedly pass through this whole territory thus opening a more direct route to California and Oregon, as well as making one of the links in the great chain of steam-communication that is soon to girdle the whole earth. When th...
