Our Prospects. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 20 October 1860

Our Prospects. As the present political camgaign approach- • es its end, the interrogatory is frequently put; what are your prospects? How many States will you carry ? We will answer the latter 1 question first: The immense reaction that 3 has been going on throughout the South the past two months, leads every fair nnd unprejudiced mind to beleive that Breckinridge and Lane will not lose an electoral ! vote South, which makes 120 electoral votes, added to which, we cau count almost to a mathematical certainty, on Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Indiana and California; not to say anything about our even chances of carrying New York, New Jersey and Wisconsin. Add the electoral votes of these certain Northern States to the 120 ofthe South, and we have 17f>, just 23 more than is necessary to a choice by the people. Does any body wish us to answer the first question now ? Notwithstanding the loud cries of the opposition parties, a dispassionate view of the political landsc...

I>r. (iwin's Speech in !San Francisco. v> c puonsn me ionowiug extracts irom i the tpeech of Dr. Gwin in San Francisco, delivered on the 6th inst., in relation to the j oft repented assertions, by the Black Republicans, of his connection with the Steamship Company and the Lime Point affair. He speaks for himself—read it: Dr. Gwin then spoke of the charge by i the opposition, that he was interested in the ! stuck of the Pacific Mail Steamship Compai ny. This he denounced as a stale and loath- ! some calumny, and said he "never had been, nor had any one in any way connected with him ever been interested to the value of the parings of his finger nails, in that company in any way whatever." The company was established in 1547, under legislative contract, to carry the mails from New York and New Orleans to Astoria, in Oregon, which contract did not expire till October last. No legislation had ever been had concerning the company till he procured the bill passed requ...

The Fusion in Oregon. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 20 October 1860

The Fusion in Oregon. The fusion of the friends of Baker (Republican) and Ncsmith. (Douglasitc.) which resulted in the election of these two men to the United States Senate, from Oregon, is hut the precursor of the final union of these two parties all over the Union. Some time since when we said, that if ever driven to the wall, we would prefer Lincoln to Douglas—it so startled some of the small fry of this community, that various long ! winded and grossly insulting epithets were applied to us by certain amalgamation cor- , respondents of the Sun. It turns out now, 1 and is proven by the public and recorded j I acts of these sable parties, that they have ignored every shade of principle —if any existed between them, to consummate a common object—to obtain the spoils. Hereto--1 fore, in the past history of parties in our eountrv, every party has stood through each succeeding contest of this character, firm and undaunted in the advocacy of its party tenets, whether successful or not U...
