For all the extensive media coverage that Israel and the Middle East receives,iron- ically, the most common refrain I have heard during my tenure as the press officer is that people just don't understand what's happening over there. While the media pro- vides a snapshot of the daily events in Israel,it remains the role of the Consulate's press office to provide a broader picture of the Israeli reality. As the press officer, ithas been my responsibility to conduct the media and public diplomacy out- reach across our five-state Southwest region (Texas, Louisiana,Oklahoma, Arkansas and New Mexico). In this capacity, I helped craft theo...

Members from both the congregation and The Covenant School, which leases space from CSI, worked with Habitat for Humanity in an interfaith project that will result in a home for a deserving local family. What is unusual about this particular effort is that the home is not being con- structed on-site. The house is being built on CSI's grounds and will be moved to Southeast Oak Cliff upon completion. Shirley Davidoff, volunteer coordina- tor, said, "I have worked with Habitat before and it is a wonderful organiza- tion." She said that no one needs con- structio...

In the tra- ditional world, salespeople believe they develop credi- bility by "telling." They "show up and throw up." It's all about their prod- uct, their features and benefits. Traditional salespeople meet with their potential customers assuming they have all the answers to "sell" them. Professional sales- people learn and apply a secret that amateurs never learn or fully understand. The secret to successful selling (and developing credibility) is not remembering what to say, but rather remembering what to ask. 1. Questions focus on the buyer, not on your product. 2. It is this redeeming G-d who created every human being in His image and displayed to all of the nations His desire for everyone to be free when the totalitarian despot Pharaoh was forced to free the subjugated Israelites. And our G-d is a G-d of uncon- ditional love: When Moses asks the question of questions, "Show me your ways on earth," the Almighty responds "Y-HVH Y-HVH," "Redeeming love, Redeeming love." The repetition is explained by our Talmudic Sages to mean, "I am the G-d of redeeming love before you sin, and I am the G-d of redeeming love after you sin" (Exodus 22:18, 34:6, Rashi ad loc). Yes, our Bible presents a legal system which it commands ...

Jewish people have many distin- guishing characteristics. Most are positive, such as excelling in educa- tion, business or our chosen profes- sions; holding a strong love for our families, our religion, the Torah, and G-d. We are a kind, caring people; "a chosen people," we are told in the Torah. But as a people, espe- cially Ashkenazi Jews because of concentration of our gene pool in cen- turies past, we possess a propensity to certain med- ical conditions. Tay-Sachs Disease is the best known of these. But what about intestinal disorders? Is your kishka (small intestine) as chosen as the rest of you? There are indeed certain inflam- matory intestinal ailments found more commonly in Jewish people. The cornerstone of these is Crohn's disease, which causes inflammation anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract, mostly in the lower small int...

"The inter- national community wouldn't tolerate pictures of starving Pales- tinian children, and the address for its complaints would be Israel," For- eign Minister Tzipi Livni said. Nor does Olmert want to do any- thing that might spark a new round of Palestinian terror. That is prob- ably the one way he could lose the upcoming election. Some pundits argue that Olmert's room for maneuver against Hamas is extremely limited anyway, precisely because of Israel's need to retain the moral high ground and the interna- tional support that goes with it. By far the most dramatic measure Olmert could have taken short of war would have been to cut Gaza off from Israel and the West Bank. But that wou...

A month ago, I wrote about a friend who attended a Fort Worth church program pre- sented by three women: one Israeli Jew, one each Palestinian Christian and Muslim, traveling the U.S. under the banner of an orga- nization called "Partners for Peace," telling Americans all about the terrible terms of the Israeli "occupation." My friend got few responses to her questions that evening, and when she asked the church pastor if she could sit down with him to discuss the Middle East situation, the answer was "No." Right away, I heard from Len Schweitzer, chair of the Fort Worth- Tarrant County JCRC, who had previ- ously rebutted in print what he called "an overtly Palestinian propagandis...

I can't help remembering my many trips to Italy and, specifically, the month I spent in Milan 10 years ago. I was there working.
