Page 8 The Brand August 19 1996 Summer softball makes for interesting water sport By Guy Shaul Special Writer The largest summer softball league since the great flood of '62 was formed this past year during HSU's first summer session. This year's gang included 57 HSU students three full-time professors and one full fledged CLIFSCHWENK (a rare breed in these parts). As usual all the participants were thrown into a hardhat and then placed on a team. Four teams were made but all players were asked to play with whichev- er team needed them on any particular day. Well the summer softball league ended with as great a bang as it came in with rain & thunder that is. The cham- pionship night was held Tuesday July 2 and was postponed indefinitely due to trenchcial rains that made playing impos- sible but extremely fun to watch. Since there was no true winner declared all the teams decided to give the prized "T-shirts" to a selected group of players who showed the most sportsman- like atti...

August 19 1996 The Brand Page 9 HSU soccer programs gear up for success in 1 996 By John Neese Sports Information Coaches Cory Foster and Rcna Richardson may be a bit young around the Hardin-Simmons coaching circle but don't let their age fool you. In what was supposed to be a rebuild- ing year last season first-year head coach Foster led the HSU men's soccer program to an II -8 record and a berth in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics playoffs. Foster's squad secured the third seed in the NAIA Independent Sectional Tournament which was the school's high- est seeding in the NAIA playoffs ever. And Richardson who's coming off an excellent offseason of recruiting looks to give HSU its first-ever American Southwest Conference women's soccer championship. So who says age is everything any- way? This year the Cowboys will once again be dangerous as they have a pair of high-scoring forwards returning to lead the charges. Sophomores Brian Nelson and Brant Bird scored 19 a...

Page 10 The Brand August 19 1996 BACK IN THE SADDLE Cowboys poised for fifth straight run at NAIA playoffs By Josh Bowerman Sports Editor The Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys can't help but be excited about the start of the 1996 football season. The Cowboys open the season ranked No. 7 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics preseason foot- ball poll and are looking to win the first- ever American Southwest Conference championship. HSU is also vying for their fifth con- secutive trip to the NAIA Division II playoffs. Head coach Jimmie Reeling's (34- 21) team appears to be primed and ready as he welcomes back several key figures from last season's squad which went 9-2 and advanced to the NAIA Division II quarterfinals. Offensive coordinator Alan Wartcs will count on quarterback Todd Baumann and slotback Todd Bloom to electrify Shclton Staduim crowds with a devistat- ing passing attack that averaged just under 250 passing yards and 403 yards of total offense per cont...

Page 2 The Brand September 5 1996 Following God's will in a godless society All you have to do is glance at a newspaper to see what type of shape our world is in. High-powered political advisors are leaking government information to mere "streetwalkers;" passenger planes arc being blown out of the sky by ground-to-air missiles; and the once faltered nation of Iraq is cruisin for another bruisin by the U.S. military. Need I say more? We live in a time where peace and love have been replaced with power and greed yet our government continues to print "In God We Trust" on the backs of Ave and ten dollar bills? Come on who do they think they're fooling? That's where you and I come in to play. We are the next generation which is said to be the worst crop as of yet. But I disagree. I have more friends and know more Chris Hatcher ! T Editor in Chief people right now in this generation who arc making greater strides to "get right with God" than any elder in their fami- lies. September 5 1996 The Brand Page 3 A fresh-man view of campus life Power control superiority ... A few months ago these simply seemed like everyday life. As a high school senior you are at the top in a world and it takes four long years to become the best. Then in the blink of an eye graduation arrives and the class moves on. Someone once said "The best thing that could happen to a senior is to become a freshman." I would have to say I agree. Before orientation week I had my doubts about HSU. Am I going to survive after eating in the cafete- ria? Just exactly how do 40 girls share one bathroom? Will I really be thrown in the pond if I don't sing the Freshman song? And do I really have to wear my beanie a whole week? I was also glad to know that I wasn't the only freshman feeling this way. Now I sec that a lot of the frightening things I had heard were from upperclass- men just doing their job being uppcrclassmcn. Things seemed to become so much clearer at ori- entation. Not only did ...

September 5 1996 The Brand Page 5 Campus police provide many features to students By Erica Carter News Editor Many Hardin-Simmons students have visited the campus police office to appeal "mistaken" parking tickets but students may not be aware of its many offered features. The HSU Campus Police have stated that their number one priority is the phys- ical safety of students and their property. Don Dcarman chief of university police wants students to be aware of their sur- rounding when entering campus late at night or early in the morning. "If you ever sec anything suspicious never stop or exit your vehicle" says Dcarman. "Drive directly in front of one of the dorms and call the campus police." The police stress that if you arc ever walking around campus and find yourself in trouble go to the nearest safety phone on campus. These phones are located in different locations throughout campus including: the northeast corner of the music build- ing Caldwell Hall; the northeast corner of H...

Page 6 The Brand September 5 1996 HATE TO THE CHIEF President Lanny Hall makes a lasting impression at HSU By Elizabeth Corder Staff Writer The freshman experience of leaving home and coming to an unfamiliar place filled with unfamiliar faces can be over- whelming for even the toughest of stu- dents. But there is one face that doesn't strike terror in the hearts of Hardin- Simmons University freshmen because this person knows where freshmen are coming from and the emotions they arc feeling. After all he was once a freshman here himself. He is HSU President Lanny Hall. Dr. Hall came to Hardin-Simmons for the first time in 1967. After his fresh- man year he returned home to Ft. Worth and enrolled at North Texas University in Denton. He earned his bachelor of science degree in secondary education in 1971 with teaching fields in political science and History. He then continued his educ- tion at NTS and earned his master of edu- cation degree in secondary education in 1973. He wanted to ...

September 5 1996 The Brand Page 7 New faces old places for HSU dorm directors By Kathy Muramoto Managing Editor Seven dedicated young men and women and in some cases their spouses and children have undertaken a ministry commonly called "dorm director" for the duration of Hardin-Simmons University's school year Of the seven four are brand new to the job. Mike Fmnell joined Brandon and Holly Honeycutt this fall in Anderson Hall the largest dorm by far on the HSU campus. Finnell is originally from San Diego Cal. where he met Rachel Johnson the dorm director for Behrcns. Johnson told him about HSU. and after considering the sports and recreation program offered Finnell decided to come on board. Although Finnell admitted there was a little bit of a culture shock when he moved from California to Texas the change has been "no problem." Finnell said "Check-in was a little crazy" but he has come to greatly appreciate his Resident Advisors or "RAs" as they are commonly called. Finnell brought...

Hard work long hours pay off for HSU cheerleaders By Kathy Muramoto Managing Editor Cheerleaders from Hardin-Simmons University were rewarded for their extra hours of hard work this summer with a bid to attend the national cheerleading competitions in Daytona Beach. The bid qualifies the HSU team to compete with hundreds of other cheer- leaders in Division III from around the nation the first weekend in April. While excelling as a team is impor- tant to cheerleading individual achieve- ment is vital as well. "There is more vis- ible progression" said Jeff Carr a junior secondary education major. "There is always a challenge. In a regular sport you learn the skill and then try to perfect it. Here there is always something new t...

September 5 1996 The Brand Page 9 Brando Kilmer provide little in silly sci-fi remake By Chris Hatcher Editor in Chief How do you like your sci-fi thriller remakes? Hopefully not too complex or horrif- ic though The Island of Dr. Morcau tries desperately to convince you otherwise on both accounts. Director John Frankcnheimcr's adaptation of the horrid H.O. Wells clas- sic is a misguided humanity plea at best; an absurd frcakshow at worst. It docs Wells' original work no justice largely (and I mean largely) due to the over-dramatics and undcrachievcmcnts of the film's big names Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer. Brando looking all of 350 and sadly out of his clement portrays Dr. R.G.V. Morcau a mad scientist with a nose for bad medicine. Criticized for his bizarre experiments the former Pulitzer-prize winner has spent the past 17 years on a remote island and for good reason he's ruler over a race of "manimals" (half man half animal) created by his own hands. Referred to as Moreau's "child...

Page 10 The Brand September 5 1996 Dogs of Peace' new sound is fairly old news By Paul Corder Staff Writer If you've listened to KGNZ's "Light Brigade" anytime in the last several months you've probably heard the first single from the Dogs of Peace "Pray to God." This song is a strong radio hit that showcases the tight harmonies of the two Dogs of Peace Jimmic Lcc Sloas (vocalsbasskcyboards) and Gordon Kennedy (vocalsguitar). Unfortunately this song and one other "I Wanna Know" are the only songs on their album Peace that display a great blending of rock influences simply described as the "Dogs of Peace sound." Both Sloas and Kennedy bring impressive resumes to the table though. Kennedy began his career as guitarist for White Heart during the 1980's and is known as one of the best studio guitarists and songwriters around lending his tal- ents to artists such as Amy Grant and PFR. (He also wrote Eric Clapton's new single "Change the World") Sloas started out with the Imperials and th...

Page 12 The Brand September 5 1996 HSU soccer blasts DBU 4-1 in season opener Ellis breaks school record in collegiate debut By Chris Hatcher Editor in Chief The Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys soccer team was a one man wrecking crew Tuesday night in a 4-1 rout of the Dallas Baptist University Crusaders. Forward Jeff Ellis in his collegiate debut single-handedly stopped the Crusaders scoring all four HSU goals and breaking a school record. "I was shocked" was Ellis' reply to breaking the HSU record for most goals scored in a game. " It was my first college game and I scored four goals! I was also playing against my brother Brad which was pretty exciting." Head coach Cory Foster in his sec- ond full season at the helm of the pro- gram was pleased with the efforts of his young team. "I'm very pleased with the win" said Foster. "I felt like we could have scored more goals but overall we did a good job on both ends of the field." The Cowboys had a 2-0 lead at half- time before Ellis c...

Page 2 The Brand 5epternber'12 1996 There's no time to kill in the life of a student If fall semesters at HSU arc good for one thing it's definitely time con- sumption. During a time of year where a mil- lion and one things are happening around HSU some people seem to think they can tackle them all usually at once. I guess I'm one of those people because right now I'm trying to juggle a full class schedule intramural football city league softball and editing the news- paper. Plus I have a wife and a home to take care of not to mention bills bills and more bills to pay. I'm sure most of you reading this know exactly what I'm saying and are probably for the most part guilty of the same crime. But here's a little hint of advice to those of you who arc struggling to make ends meet; struggling to study for class- es; or just plain struggling to get out of bed God will not lay anything on your shoulders that you can't handle. Now I know every time you hear someone say that you want to sla...

September 12 1996 The Brand Page 3 Convocation opens new year at HSU By Erica Carter News Editor Hardin-Simmons University's 1996 convocation ceremonies official opened the school's academic year last Thursday with a bit of good humor and strong meaning. Dr. Don Newbury president of Howard Payne University encouraged students in many areas as the keynote speaker for the school's 105th opening ceremonies. The program which is always filled with spirited tradition marks a time where professors and students meet to officially begin a new and improved year. The color guard opened this year's ceremonies with the HSU Concert Choir and Chorale Brass Ensemble performing the national anthem as well as a few other selections. The deans for each HSU school were introduced before Dr. Newbury took the stage for his speech. Dr. Newbury's directed his speech towards students as an encouragement to grow and learn both educationally and spiritually. He prompted students to "make the most of a practi...
