His, Excellency The Lieutenant Governor left town on Wednesday morning for Port Dal- rymple, accompanied by Captain Montagu and Mr. Arthur. The country on the west coast of Van Diemen's, land from Cape Grim to Pieman's river, a dis-   tance of about 80 miles, consists mostly of low sandy hills covered with shrubs and wiry grass,   evidently gaining rapidly on the sea. The south-   east coast on the contrary is abrupt and rocky, like mountains of which one half had been wash-     ed away. A singular geological conformation occurs on the Salt Pan plain. The summit of of a small conical hill called Dun's battery, ri-   sing about 70 feet from the plain, consists of a   rich iron-stone ; the middle is composed of lime-   stone and the base of free or sand stone.
