The "Forest King" Compensation Case. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 14 November 1885

The " Forest King" Compensation Case# TiirV-A November 6th, Alfred; Midgley, for F^ssifern, moved in the Assembly that the report pf the " Forest King" Select Committee be adopted, and that the House resolve itself into Committee to. give effect to the recommendation of such report. My- readers will; vividly remember the circum ^nces ^f the seizure of tbe Forest King, on July 9th, 188£, the subsequent proceedings in the Admir alty Court, the acquittal of all concerned in the Forest King of the atrocious charge of kidnapping ana illegally recruiting—charges trumped up . on stetements made by5 Hugh M&man, P.M., to Ciapt. Marx, of. H.M.S. Swinger—and the verdict of the Supreme Court, casting Capt. Marx in costs (but no damages, as the Court believed he acted conscien-: i tiously). The Griffith Government paid the costs for the Admiralty, though for "what reason does not. appear, judging by .Sam's subsequent attitude. Tliat is the burden of the wail which I am continu ally receiving from all quarters from subscribers. It comes about this way. Gordon and Gotch, my Brisbane agents, attend to the forwarding ,of all papers to subscribers in the country. "When a sub scriber's year is up, Gordon and G^teh, in the formal way of business, write, reminding said subscriber of the fact, and requesting, if Figaro is to be con tinued for another year, that the yearns subscription should be paid in advance. Then the subscriber sends Gordon and Gotch for myself) the £1, and also writes me an indignant letter that says, in effect, if not in so many words,—" Surely my name's good enough for a pound I" , Mow, let me explain my position to my readers. I do a; solid and a genuine business. I have some 7000 paying subscribers on my books. They all...

To Correspondents. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 14 November 1885

To Correspondents. " Loowood."—My dear boy, I feel for you. It is too bad that, while you and your best girl were " eeated on the brow of the scrub, watching patiently the bright moon and twinkling stars that shone above your heads " {you didn fc expect thorn to shine below your heads, did you ? ) " and . listening to the bounding Wallaby, hissing noiselessly (U through the scrub," they should have been disturbed by " two shots in quick succession, which caused the young gentleman to run " (wise young gentleman!) " and the young lady to shriek and fall in a swoon." I feel for you, but what can I do ? Ton say the shot has all been ex tracted from your back and that the young lady is O.K. I can only advise you to, in future, leave the " patient watching of the bright moon and twinkling stars " "on the brow of the scrub " to the " bounding wallaby," and then sportsmen are not likely to mistake, you and your girl for marsupial game. The Yellow Agony Afloat. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 14 November 1885

The Yellow A^ony Afloat. A. number of letters have recently appeared in the local papers with reference to the involuntary com panionship of European steerage passengers with Chinese in steamers trading on our coast. One case, cited as an instance, is that of a steamer on a recent trip from Cooktown to Brisbane, -when all the berths on one side were occupied by Chinkies. They were supplied with blankets, sheets, and pillows, which would, in all probability, be thereafter usedbyaihy Europeans who secured the same bunks. This is decidedly objectionable. To say nothing of the various contagious diseases which seem the peculiar property of the Phinky, their ways are not our ways; and, as a rule, they Are unclean. One correspondent suggests that some distinction should be made in the color of bedding supplied to Chinkies and to Europeans, in which case the latter could avoid using those of celestial hue, and even prefer to do without any at all, rather, than to camp in sheets in which le...

North of Us. Rockhampton. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 14 November 1885

North of Us. By Peteb Bunkum. Rockhampton. Independence: Thy -spirit independence let me share, Lord of the lionheart and eagle eyej Thy steps I follow with my bosom bare, Nor heed the storm that howls along the sky. —Smollett. ~"M6st 6f the Soefehampton tnen are independent in one sense of the word, but there are only a few men of independent means. One of these I have chosen as a type of independence, not only because he has an Independent spirit but an independent purse. The old British Lion, Walter; Cook, lias made his pile in Kockharapton. And is a living proof of what a man can; do by persev«rance &nd industry. Though hie brain may be Shallow and his ideas perverted. By studying economy and minding his own business, he has managed to succeed. Walter is the very opposite of most men. As ainle, the poor man is a radical and a democrat, but; as soon, as he gathers in the dollars andbecomes a wealthy man., lie is a conserva tive to the backbone. But Walter has reversed the...
