POLISH CAMPAIGN. GERMANS WEAKENING. TERRIBLE SUFFERINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Hopetoun Courier and Mallee Pioneer — 15 January 1915

POLISH CAMPAIGN. GERMANS WEAKENING. . ; TERRIBLE' SUFFERINGS. The German offensive west of Warsaw appears to bo weakening, for it ia reported from Petrograd that the. German attacks on the Bzara.River are now half-heartod. They are badly concerted, and lack impetuosity. The condition ot the German prisoners captured is pitiable. Many of the Landstruraers are un fitted to withstand the rigours of the winter. Frostbite and exposure have added' considerably to the list of ineffectives. A remarkable thaw has set in, and most of the trenches are half filled with water formed by the melting snow.

An amusing incident occurred here a tow days ago. A number- of persona were congregated on the west sido of the railway station, and from a distance appeared to be work ing in a suspicious manner. This caught the eye of a few handy men with guns, who at once thought it must bo Germans making a concrete foundation for the big gems. Thus armed they went to investigate, but to thoir surprise and great joy found n few of their neighbors endeavor 5 ing to put a ball down a hole with | a Etick.- Golf they called It,.
