The Late Queen's Children. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 11 March 1901

The Late Qucoei's fhUiErcn. Prince Helena married a German Prince, and her name is familiar to us as Princess Christian. She and her husband live almost altogether in Eeglaud, and the Princess gives up a great part of her time iu inspecting hosnitals and anvthimr to do with nursing. During this present Boer war she collected funds to build hos pital traius, which carried nurses and doctors, as well as sick men. She lost her son (Prince Christian Victor) in battle last year. Princess Louise married a great Scottish nobleman, the Marquis of Lome, now, through the death of his father, Duke of Argyle. For some years the marquis was Governor of Canada. They have no children, and we hear less of this princess than of the Queen's other children, but she has written at least one pretty little book of talcs. The Duke of Connaught is the soldier son, and has for many years occupied a high position in the army. He very much wished to go to the war, but the Queen aud her advisers begged him to ...

A Great Statistician. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 11 March 1901

A Circa t Statistiriiui. All the eloquence of the world is summed up in the numerals. They constitute the universal language, and they spell everything that is necessary t) existence and evolution. Figures can't lie, they say, aud if they are honestly manipulated, of course they can t. All the same, hgures in the hands of some mathematicians can be made to prove anything, but this merely demonstrates their value, for without error we should require no teachers. One of tbe greatest men of figures was Mr. Mulhall, and the , papers just to hand from -England re- I cord his death as an event of inter- \ national importance. For years he has been the universal educator in regard to wealth and progress, and his whole strength lay in but one thing — the splendid power of marshalling figures, and through them condensiug great and bewildering matters into compre hensible form. Mt. Mulhall was an Englishman who spent many years of his life in Buenos Ayers, where he conducted a statistical new...

HAY v WARADGERY. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 14 March 1901

HAY v WARADGERY. The above match was continued and concluded in the oval on Wednesday afternoon. What promised to be a close finish, judging by last play day, ended in a crushing defeat for the Hay club by nine wickets and one run. Such is the glorious uncertainty of the glorious pastime. On resumption of play yesterday the scores stood — Hay 1st innings 84 ; Waradgery, 8 for 50. The last two wickets added 54 runs of which number H. Emerson put to gether 21 in fine style, while Jack Reid put together 19 with a real servicable way at a critical time. A new batsman named Griffiths knocked up 24 (not out) in quite a business-like manner, and the Waradgery first innings ended for the respectable total of 104. The Hay team in their second innings collapsed completely before the magnificent bowling of Jack Reid (5 for 23) and W. Gibbs (4 for 21) and the innings terminated for 47. L Rutherford 17 being the only double figure scorer. The 28 required to win was knocked up for the War adgery ...

Narrandera. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 14 March 1901

Narrnndcra. [From our own Correspondent.] Tlie Agricultural Society propose erecting a grand stand before next show to cost £700. The society Iiave a balance in hand of over £300, and anticipate no trouble in financing it. A raining expert from Peak Hill named Mr B. Colding is erecting a complete cyanide plant at the Grong Grong reef on the old Harry Smith battery site. The plant treat 80 tons of tailings per week, and they assay from 2 dwts to 3 dwts per ton, so no difficulty should exist in obtaining handsome returns as the heap must embrace from 4000 to 6000 tons close to a good supply of water. If the Narrandera citizens possessed the en terprise of the Hay people as evidenced in the shareholders of the Riverina. G.M. Co., this venture would have been taken up long ago. The Federal elections are not ex citing much interest here. Almost all supporters of the Government policy will support the selected candidate Mr T. C. Watson, as Mr Heffernan's speech showed an inability to dist...

Mr. Reid at Goulburn. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 14 March 1901

Mr. Reid at Gonlburn. Mr. Reid, addressed a ? crowd of 3,000 from the hotel balcony at Goulburn last night and had magnificent reception. He said that the Free Trade Liberal jjeague was not airaia ot its name. People had heard of a body called the National Protection Union, ?which, was a straightforward name for a political body, but when the protectionist champions met recently in Sydney the name hit upon for the fighting league was~ the Australian Liberal Association. They had not the pluck to put ' protection' into it. A more colourless title for a fighting political body, on the eve of a great struggle was never adopted. Freetraders struck a manlier and more honest note in putting the true aim into the title of their association. In New South Wales protectionists were in a minority. Their only chance of winning was, but through their success in trying to con vince a lot of new recruits that if they joined them it would not make any difference. That was & ^juilijii;c&...

Sib, — I suppose you have road lately of the discovery by Astronomers of a new nlmmf alon nf ifn ' riiannnnnranra T f.tiinir the lost planet must have dropped down in Hay, and as this ia such an out of the way place, astronomers never think of looking here for such things. What makes me think the missing star dropped here is that a very bright star lately arrived in this town, and at a meeting held to form a free trade league a number of gentlemen attended who by their previous actions, I took to be protectionists. I will tell you what hap pened {as I am informed). This new arrival addressed the meeting, advocating the im position of a duty of Gd per lb on tea, to make up the deficiency of two millions or so caused by the advent of federation, and on the strength of tin's proposal he was elected to a high position in the...

Brisbane Notes. (From our own Correspondent.) The Federal Premier, Mr Bartta, 9 has come and gone. He met with a ';$m hearty reception and addressed large ||H audiences in various parts of the :'MM State. Melbourne Letter [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 14 March 1901

Melbourne Letter (Prom our own Correspondents Although the daily papers publish every morning, colujnns of reports of election meetings, it cannot be said that the people as a rule are takimr much interest in the matter. With very few exceptions everybody lias decided how he will vote and if the polling took place to-morrow the result would he practically the same as it will be on the 29th. As far as Victoria is concerned Mr Barton will be sure of a good majority, but to say that the coming elections v/illdecidethe question of Freetrade v. Protection is absurd As a matter of fact Mr Barton tells us that he is advocating a revenue tariff and in no sense can a revenuo tariff be called a protection one. Of course it does not follow therefore that the proposed tariff is of a freetrado nature. It would have been more honest on the part of the Federal Premier to have suppressed the words protection and freetrade and to have manfully stated that he desires revenue only and leaves the other...
