BRITISH AND OTHER EXTRACTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 14 October 1870

BRIT'ISH AND OTHER' EiXTRACTS:. A most important and interesting trial of asea torpedo was:made on July P25. in the offinn at Plymouth. The Commanderian. Chief, Admiral Sir H. Codriotiii;Ki.C.fB,, Captain the Hon F.,A. Foley, Captain Jones, Caipain Napier,' Commander,,;arvey (the inventor), and other naval authbrities were presenton board the gunboat Pigeon. Several attacks were also made on the turret-ship Prince Albert in every conceivable direction, and in almost every instance with 'domplete sucoess, as the capsule was found to be pierced after.. every contact, showing thatbhad the torpedoes been loaded with-an explosive com pound, the destruction of the vessels struck must have ensued. The trial, although quite sufficient tq show the principle and accuracy of this formidable weapon would have displayed its precision more promi nently had the towing been performed by a faster, vessel than the Pigeon, which steams only six knots, whoreas it should be a speed of 11 knots at least t...

MANSFIELD. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 14 October 1870

MANSFIELD.   From " THE INDEPENDENT."     A general meeting of the members of the Mansfield Cricket Club was held on Monday evening, at the Royal Hotel, for the purpose of electing a President in the room of Dr Rowe. Mr A. Smith occupied the chair, and Messrs Moorey and Baldry were proposed for the vacant office, and both received very warm support. Mr Moorey was ultimately elected President, by a majority of but one. The appointment of either of these gentlemen would have been highly popular. Both are   enthuashitlc lovers of the game, good practi cal cricketers, and from the commencement have lent every assistance to forwarding the interests of the club. We have no doubt but that Mr. Moorey will fill the position of President with credit to himself, and advan tage to the club, and we wish the Mansfield cricketers all manner of success under his presidency. We eee that the tickets for the grand drawing of prizes in aid of the fund...

The special war corespondent of. the Daily, News, writing under date of iots, 10th August, tatei:-u" The affair at Frosehwiller was some thing appalling. I spoke with one of the rural guard who saw the whole business from a tower of'Nlederbronni. He saw t the men" retreating under the grape-shot of the Germans, thoroughly exhausted, and hundreds of horses galloping back to the lines, covered with blood, and screeching horribly. The cries reached him. The regiments which fought in the battle lost by M'Mahou were the 8th, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 32nd, 10th, 65th, (iSrd, Gth, l6th, 76th, and 77th, and the. 3rd, 10th, and 12th Chasseurs. I fell in with an old soldier wounded in this battle, who says he never witnesod anything so frightful as the carnage. If M'Mahon had only been reinforced at 12 o'clock on the 0th he would have achieved a great victory, as the enemy.was falling back; but unhappily he had no reserves, and the G...
